Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Your Impact As the Deputy Principal of Lihir International School, you will support the strategic direction, day-to-day operations and effective leadership of the school. Working in partnership with the Principal and teaching team, you will strengthen curriculum delivery, staff capability and student outcomes while fostering a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment. As Part of Our Team, You Will Support the Principal in delivering the school’s strategic vision, educational goals and operational priorities, including staff induction, performance development and workforce planning. Lead curriculum planning, assessment and reporting across the Australian and PNG curricula, using student data to set achievement targets and improve learning outcomes. Mentor and coach teaching staff in contemporary pedagogical practices, curriculum delivery, data analysis and professional development. Promote a safe, inclusive and positive school environment that supports diverse learners, student wellbeing, effective behaviour management and responsible OHS risk management. Coordinate school operations, staff schedules and key events while building positive relationships with students, parents, the School Council and the broader community. Build and maintain strong relationships with students, parents, carers, the School Council and the broader community, supporting positive engagement and effective communication. Lead and support school and community events, including assemblies, graduations, cultural celebrations, awards evenings, productions, parent forums and School Council meetings. Contribute to the management of health, safety and environmental risks through risk identification, mitigation planning, incident reporting and the promotion of a safe learning and working environment. Prerequisites for Success in This Role Bachelor’s degree in Education with current teacher registration. Experience in school leadership, administration or a comparable educational leadership role. Strong knowledge of Australian and PNG Curriculum, learning methodologies and educational best practices. Demonstrated leadership capability with experience managing teams, building inclusive cultures and driving positive educational outcomes. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data, make informed decisions and continuously improve student programs and outcomes. Exceptional communication, stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with students, parents, staff, School Councils and community stakeholders. High level of computer literacy, including proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to leverage technology to support educational and operational outcomes. Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining a commitment to health, safety and educational excellence. Your Work Environment Reporting within the Lihir People function and working closely with the Principal, you will provide leadership and guidance to the teaching and non-teaching teams at Lihir International School. You will collaborate with teaching and non-teaching colleagues, students, parents, the LIS School Council, Education Queensland International, the Department of Education International, local schools and community stakeholders to support educational excellence and the effective operation of the school. This role is offered on a 2-year fixed-term, full-time basis and operates on a residential 5:2 roster, working 10-hour days, based in Newmont’s Lihir townsite community, a gated precinct based on the coastline cliff with magnificent ocean views. The townsite has Company provided housing (inc. utilities), international school (up to and including Year 10) and a range of recreational facilities including gym, sports club with restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts and playground areas for the kids. There is also a 9-hole golf course on the island! Healthcare services are provided at the Lihir Medical Clinic. An onsite deli and café provide access to fresh local and imported produce including grocery items, as well as barista-made coffees and freshly baked cakes. The company offers regular shipment of groceries and care packages for townsite residents to access goods not available on the island. The Lihir fishing and boating clubs offer the opportunity to get out and enjoy the pristine waters and beaches around the island on the weekends.
