The Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office has current openings for one forensic pathologist each in our Central Point, Clackamas (Portland metro area), and Eugene locations.

Responsibilities

Deputy State Medical Examiners provide forensic pathology services at three locations: Central Point, Clackamas (Portland metro area), and Eugene. The State Medical Examiner’s Office is currently recruiting one forensic pathologist for each location.

Each position includes performing autopsies, providing expert medical consultation, preparing reports for death investigations, and delivering training to law enforcement agencies, county medical examiners, district attorneys, and medicolegal death investigators. Our forensic pathologists are supported by skilled autopsy technicians and a dedicated administrative team.

Toxicology testing is performed by the Oregon State Police Forensic Services Division, an ANAB‑accredited laboratory.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office offers paid licensure renewals, CME, professional memberships, annual conference attendance, and generous relocation reimbursement.

Qualifications

Graduation from an approved medical school with an MD or DO. Board certification or eligibility in anatomic pathology or anatomic/clinical pathology from the American Board of Pathology at hire, with board certification in forensic pathology required within two years. Must hold, or be eligible to obtain, an Oregon medical license at the time of hire.

Forensic pathology fellows are encouraged to apply. Fellows selected for the Eugene or Central Point positions will begin their employment at the Clackamas facility, working closely with senior forensic pathologists to learn Oregon’s system and build the skills needed for independent practice. After demonstrating competency, the fellow will transition to their permanent assignment. This training period is expected to last about one year, though it may be shorter depending on the candidate’s progress and comfort level.
