  • Build a rewarding electricity industry career with excellent benefits and development opportunities

At WEL Networks, every decision we make has a real impact on the lives of thousands of people across the Waikato. As a Distribution Network Controller, you'll be at the heart of our operations, making critical real-time decisions that help keep the lights on, maintain public safety, and support the growth of our region.

Whether you're an experienced Network Controller or someone with a strong electricity industry background ready to step into a challenging and rewarding career, we'd love to hear from you.

About WEL Networks

WEL Networks is proudly owned by the communities we serve.

Every day, our people plan, build, operate, and maintain the electricity network that powers the Waikato. We are committed to investing in new technologies, smarter networks, and talented people to ensure our region continues to thrive now and into the future. When you join WEL, you're not just taking on a job. You're becoming part of a team that is helping shape the future of energy in New Zealand.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Control Centre Manager, you'll join our highly skilled System Control team responsible for the safe and reliable operation of WEL's electricity network 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This is a dynamic and engaging role where no two days are the same.

Working in a 24-hour shift roster using our Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), you'll monitor network performance, coordinate planned and emergency switching, respond to network events, and work closely with field crews, engineers, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure the network remains safe, resilient, and reliable.

You'll play a critical role in:

  • Monitoring and controlling the real-time operation of WEL's electricity network

  • Planning and executing switching programmes across high and low voltage assets

  • Preparing, checking, and authorising operating instructions to enable safe work practices

  • Responding to outages, faults, and emergency situations

  • Maintaining accurate network status information within operational systems

  • Supporting customer reliability and network resilience objectives

  • Contributing to the ongoing development and use of advanced ADMS capabilities

This is a safety-critical role where clear thinking, sound judgement, and a calm approach under pressure are essential.

About You

We're looking for someone who combines technical capability with strong communication skills and a genuine desire to learn and contribute.

You may already be an experienced Network Controller, or perhaps you're working in electricity distribution, network operations, protection, field services, system operations, or a related technical environment and are ready for your next challenge.

Ideally, you'll bring:

  • A relevant electrical qualification (BE, NZCE, Diploma, or trade equivalent)

  • Knowledge of electricity distribution networks and network operating principles

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills

  • Excellent attention to detail and procedural discipline

  • Confidence using technology and operational systems

  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills

  • A commitment to safety, teamwork, and operational excellence

Most importantly, you'll be someone who stays calm under pressure, enjoys solving complex challenges, and takes pride in supporting your team and community.

Staff Benefits

Along with a competitive salary you will benefit from a powerful package of benefits if you join us at WEL – from medical, life, and income protection insurance to relocation costs, ongoing career development and more. Most importantly, you'll be part of an organisation where your work genuinely makes a difference.

Safety Comes First

Working within a safety critical industry, we are committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our people, customers, and communities. Successful applicants will be required to complete pre-employment checks, including drug and alcohol screening, a police check and participate in our annual health assessment programme.

Ready to Make an Impact?

If you're looking for a career where technology, teamwork, challenge, and purpose come together, we'd love to hear from you. Bring your skills, your ambition, and your authentic self.
