The Electrical Power Generation Engineer provides technical leadership for the design input, installation, delivery, commissioning, and operational readiness of power-generation systems supporting mission-critical data center operations. The role requires extensive electrical engineering expertise with gas turbines, reciprocating generators, diesel and natural-gas generators, generator paralleling systems, switchgear, protection systems, and associated power-generation equipment.
The engineer works cross-functionally with design, engineering, construction, delivery, commissioning, and operations teams from project initiation through final handover to ensure systems are safe, reliable, maintainable, scalable, and aligned with data center availability
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the electrical power-generation subject-matter expert throughout design, construction, commissioning, turnover, and operations support.
- Define electrical system architecture, capacity, redundancy, protection, grounding, controls interfaces, and operational-readiness requirements.
- Lead design and technical reviews for gas turbines, reciprocating generators, diesel and natural-gas generators, alternators, generator step-up transformers, generator breakers, paralleling switchgear, load banks, fuel-system electrical interfaces, and balance-of-plant equipment.
- Develop and validate generator synchronization, load-sharing, paralleling, island-mode, black-start, utility-transfer, and restoration strategies.
- Review electrical one-line diagrams, schematics, cable schedules, protection diagrams, equipment specifications, and vendor submittals.
- Perform or review short-circuit, load-flow, arc-flash, grounding, harmonic, and protective-device coordination studies.
- Coordinate electrical interfaces between generators, switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, automatic transfer switches, utility service, and data center distribution systems.
- Partner with mechanical, I&C, controls, construction, delivery, commissioning, and operations teams to ensure integrated and operable infrastructure.
- Provide technical oversight during construction, including field inspections, quality reviews, installation verification, change management, punch-list resolution, and issue escalation.
- Develop and oversee commissioning plans for generator startup, electrical energization, relay testing, switchgear testing, load-bank testing, integrated systems testing, black-start testing, and utility-transfer testing.
- Lead root-cause analysis for electrical faults, generator trips, protective-relay operations, power-quality events, failed starts, and recurring reliability issues.
- Develop electrical operating procedures, maintenance strategies, emergency-response plans, spare-parts recommendations, and lifecycle replacement plans.
- Ensure complete turnover documentation, including as-built drawings, relay settings, test reports, commissioning records, equipment manuals, training materials, warranty information, and asset records.
- Support operations through periodic testing, outage planning, event analysis, capacity upgrades, equipment replacement, and continuous reliability improvement.
Ensure compliance with applicable electrical safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field.
- 10years+ of extensive experience with electrical power generation, medium-voltage systems, and mission-critical or industrial electrical infrastructure.
- Strong knowledge of gas turbines, reciprocating generators, diesel and natural-gas generation, alternators, generator controls, synchronization, load sharing, and paralleling switchgear.
- Experience with switchgear, transformers, protective relays, power distribution, grounding, and electrical power-system studies.
- Demonstrated experience delivering power infrastructure from design through construction, commissioning, and operational handover.
- Ability to interpret and develop one-line diagrams, electrical schematics, protection diagrams, equipment specifications, and commissioning procedures.
- Strong cross-functional coordination, technical writing, vendor-management, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis skills.
Ability to support 24/7 critical operations, maintenance windows, and emergency events.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with hyperscale or enterprise data centers, microgrids, distributed energy resources, or utility-scale generation.
- Familiarity with IEEE, IEC, NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NEC, NETA, OSHA, and relevant utility/interconnection requirements.
- Experience with SEL, GE, Siemens, ABB/Hitachi Energy, Schneider Electric, Eaton, Caterpillar, Cummins, Wärtsilä, MTU/Rolls-Royce, GE Vernova, or Siemens Energy equipment.
- Professional Engineer license, NETA certification, or equivalent power-systems credential.
Certain U.S. based or U.S. customer or client-facing roles may be required to comply with applicable requirements, such as immunization/occupational health mandates, and/or drug testing requirements.
