Job Description: Our client is a global engineering powerhouse for large agricultural equipment and powertrain innovation, is seeking three Embedded Software Engineers to join their Drivetrain Electronics and Transmission Controls team in Waterloo, IA. In this hands-on embedded development role, you will design, code, model, and validate embedded control software governing the transmission and drivetrain systems of large production tractors. Beyond desktop and lab development, you will have the unique opportunity to test, validate, and tune your control algorithms directly on the final product by driving large tractors within the proving grounds. This role is an exceptional career launchpad for early-career embedded developers and recent engineering graduates.
Key Responsibilities:
- Embedded Software & Controls Development: Design, develop, and code embedded control applications using C and MATLAB / Simulink for heavy tractor drivetrain and transmission systems.
- Model-Based Design (MBD): Develop and simulate control algorithms applying core Control Theory to optimize vehicle performance, shifting smoothness, and functional safety.
- Requirements & Architecture: Author, analyze, and review functional software requirements and technical specifications for transmission electronic control units (ECUs).
- Real-World Vehicle Validation: Conduct live vehicle testing and system tuning by operating large tractors on facility test tracks to validate software behavior.
- Hardware-in-the-Loop & Bench Testing: Utilize test bench equipment, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes to debug embedded software, ECU hardware interfaces, and communication buses.
- Agile Teaming: Collaborate with cross-functional software developers, systems engineers, and test leads within an Agile engineering delivery framework.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- Embedded Development: Hands-on experience developing embedded applications utilizing C, C++, or MATLAB / Simulink.
- Control Theory: Strong foundational understanding and application of Control Theory / Control Systems (PID controllers, feedback loops, state machines).
- Requirements & Process: Experience writing, analyzing, and reviewing embedded software requirements within a structured engineering process.
- Experience Level: 1 to 3 years of embedded engineering experience, OR a recent graduate with relevant project/internship experience in embedded software/controls.
- Physical & Safety Readiness: Willingness to wear metatarsal boots on Day 1 and operate large agricultural tractors on facility testing grounds.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent technical discipline.
Stand-Out Skills (Preferred):
- Practical knowledge of vehicle communication protocols (e.g., CAN bus, J1939, LIN, Ethernet).
- Experience with mechanical/hydraulic/drivetrain systems, transmission diagnostics, or off-highway machinery.
- Familiarity with embedded tools such as compilers, emulators, debuggers, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
- Exposure to automated build tools, continuous integration (CI), and Model-in-the-Loop (MIL) / Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulation.
Actual Skills Required:
- Embedded C / C++ Programming
- MATLAB & Simulink Model-Based Development (MBD)
- Control Theory & Algorithm Design
- Embedded Software Requirements & System Debugging
- On-Vehicle Testing & Drivetrain/Transmission Control Validation
