Engineering Manager - AI Agents

About the company

Our client is an a16z-backed, Y Combinator startup building domain-specific AI agents for the trillion-dollar insurance industry. Their AI Assistant automates the work that has always slowed insurers down: submission intake, policy comparisons, and underwriting audits. Leading insurers, reinsurers, MGAs, and brokers already run on it, supporting customers who write over $15B in premiums across all 50 states. They have raised $30M+, including a $25M Series A led by a16z, with Y Combinator, Nexus, South Park Commons, and Converge behind them.

The role

You will own and scale the entire AI organization, the team building production LLM-powered agents that run on real customer money. Both founders are engineers, so you get an outsized say on product direction while building your team from the ground up, with a path to VP-level leadership as the company scales.

What you will do

• Own and grow the AI org, scaling it into three teams: AI infrastructure (routing and reliability), agent intelligence (evals, shared tools, multimodal pipelines), and agentic products (customer-facing assistant, long-running workflows)
• Set technical direction for agents that hold up in real production, including model routing, multi-agent orchestration, and reliability
• Recruit, mentor, and retain a world-class team of AI engineers, hiring the leaders beneath you as the org scales post Series A
• Stay deeply technical, still in the code and the architecture, setting the bar by example
• Push the frontier of what AI agents can do for insurance as the field evolves

What we are looking for

• 7+ years in AI/ML engineering, including managing engineers at a strong technical company
• Led an AI/ML team that shipped production LLM or agent systems
• Built and scaled an engineering team of 10+ while staying hands-on
• Depth in agentic architectures: tool use, planning, multi-agent orchestration, and evals
• Experience with model routing, reliability, and multimodal pipelines
• A clear, concise communicator who is a genuine recruiting magnet

Bonus points

• Experience at an early-stage or high-growth B2B SaaS startup
• CS or related technical degree from a top-tier program
• Founder or founding-team background

Compensation and benefits

• $300K-$450K base, with flexibility for exceptional candidates

Location

On-site in San Francisco, 5 days a week. Relocation is supported.
