About One Subsurface Programme One Subsurface is our early careers programme designed to create a pipeline of subsurface professionals. About the role The Reservoir Engineering Specialist is responsible for advancing bp's subsurface technology capabilities by developing, applying, and deploying innovative reservoir engineering, simulation, digital, and AI-driven solutions. The role combines deep technical expertise in reservoir engineering with strong skills in data science, software development, automation, and machine learning to accelerate decision-making and improve the assessment of reservoir performance, risks, and uncertainties. bp relies on a broad ecosystem of proprietary and commercial tools to support field development, production optimization, reserves maturation, carbon storage, and other subsurface decisions. This role contributes to the research, development, and deployment of next-generation technologies that enhance these workflows through automation, scalable computation, advanced analytics, and AI-enabled capabilities. The role involves developing digital products and workflows that improve reservoir model construction, history matching, uncertainty quantification, forecasting, and simulation studies. This includes leveraging machine learning, proxy modeling, agentic AI, cloud and high-performance computing, and modern software engineering practices to enable faster and more comprehensive evaluation of subsurface opportunities. The role will be in the bp Upstream R&D, Technology, which partners closely with reservoir engineers, geoscientists, petrophysicists, data scientists, software engineers, and business teams to deliver practical solutions that generate measurable business value. The role supports both traditional oil and gas assets and emerging low-carbon opportunities, helping to create robust, uncertainty-aware development and storage plans while accelerating adoption of digital and AI technologies across the organization. Minimum Requirements Seeking a PhD, majoring in reservoir engineering or related quantitative discipline, with strong computational modeling experience Must have cumulative and major GPA of 3.2 or higher On a case-by-case basis, bp may support US Immigration sponsorship for full-time or long- term employment. Must be in final year, graduating from December 2026 through May 2027 or graduated in the last 3 years. Must be available to start on agreed upon global programme start dates (January 19, 2027 or June 21, 2027).
