The Role

We are looking for enthusiastic Band 3 Health Care Support Workers (HCSWs) to join our busy and exciting Children and Young People’s Outpatient Department at the Royal Hospital for Children. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will support a wide range of multi-specialty outpatient clinics, delivering high-quality care and support to children, young people and their families. The role involves clinical interventions, patient support, health promotion activities and contributing to the smooth day-to-day running of outpatient services. Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills are essential, along with previous experience working with children.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) may be able to provide visa sponsorship for certain roles, subject to the post meeting the relevant eligibility criteria. Sponsorship is not guaranteed and will be determined on a case-by-case basis following interview and during the pre-employment verification process. Key Responsibilities

As a Health Care Support Worker within the Children and Young People’s Outpatient Department, you will play a vital role in supporting the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate care. Duties include preparing and maintaining clinic rooms and equipment, welcoming and supporting patients and families, assisting clinicians during consultations and procedures, undertaking clinical activities such as phlebotomy, wound care, plaster cast application and removal, skin-prick testing, urinalysis and baseline observations. You will also assist with patient moving and handling, specimen management, chaperoning, patient flow through clinics, health promotion activities and supporting outreach clinics across the health board. The role requires providing reassurance and comfort to children and their families, maintaining high standards of infection prevention and control, participating in audits and quality improvement work, and contributing to the education and induction of students and new staff.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Previous experience working with children (essential)
  • Previous experience working in a clinical or outpatient setting
  • SVQ Level III in Care Studies (or equivalent qualification)
  • Membership of Disclosure Scotland PVG Scheme
  • Competence in phlebotomy
  • Wound care and dressing skills
  • Experience of orthopaedic care, including plaster cast application and removal
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent team-working abilities
  • GCSE (or equivalent) English and Mathematics
  • Commitment to quality improvement and patient-centred care
  • Ability to participate in mandatory training and continuous professional development
  • Experience supporting health education and health promotion activities
