Project Overview:

Bechtel is building a semiconductor manufacturing plant in New Albany, Ohio. Bechtel will design and build Phase 1 of the Ohio One project, a total of 2.5 million square feet, including 600,000 square feet of cleanrooms. Construction will require as much steel as eight Eiffel Towers and as much concrete as the tallest skyscrapers.

Bechtel will strengthen future economic development in the region by partnering with the North America Building Trades Unions and suppliers to create several thousand new jobs and work with local education organizations to implement new training programs that will support the future talent pipeline.

Job Summary:

The Preservation Field Engineer plans, coordinates and verifies preservation of equipment and materials from receipt and storage through installation, commissioning and turnover. The role protects asset condition, supports warranty requirements and reduces deterioration, rework and startup risk through documented, equipment-specific preservation controls.

Under general supervision, independently manage the assigned preservation scope within approved project procedures, schedule and delegated authority. Apply sound field engineering judgment, coordinate work across disciplines and escalate issues that require engineering disposition or management approval.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Review vendor and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) instructions, purchase requirements and approved project procedures. Translate applicable requirements into equipment-specific preservation plans, inspection criteria and recurring task frequencies; resolve conflicts through the authorized technical review process.
  • Maintain a preservation asset register identifying equipment tags, locations, condition, custody, applicable requirements, inspection frequencies, task owners and due dates. Update status as materials move between receiving, storage, installation and commissioning.
  • Verify receiving condition and warehouse or laydown suitability. Coordinate appropriate packaging, supports, covers, environmental protection, segregation and handling controls, and maintain protection of installed equipment until custody is formally transferred.
  • Inspect corrosion, moisture ingress, contamination and cleanliness controls, including protective coatings, sealed openings, desiccants or humidity controls where specified. Confirm that preservation methods remain compatible with the equipment, storage conditions and subsequent installation activities.
  • Coordinate authorized recurring maintenance, such as lubrication, shaft rotation or preservation checks, only where required by equipment-specific instructions and approved procedures. Verify task completion by qualified personnel and the required permits, isolations and safeguards before work proceeds.
  • Identify and document preservation deficiencies, overdue tasks and damage. Assess priority, escalate safety, quality, warranty and schedule impacts, obtain approved corrective actions and verify closure without accepting unauthorized repairs or deviations.
  • Integrate preservation activities with construction and commissioning schedules. Forecast labor, access, consumables and protection needs; coordinate subcontractor assignments and interfaces, monitor performance and communicate constraints to the Project Field Engineer.
  • Maintain traceable inspection records, photographs, task history, vendor guidance and corrective-action evidence. Report preservation status and outstanding risks, and support quality reviews, audits and turnover documentation.
  • Coordinate handover to commissioning and the receiving custodian. Confirm equipment condition, approved removal or reinstatement of preservation measures, outstanding items and continuing obligations. Document custody transfer and task ownership so preservation responsibilities remain clear through turnover.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8-10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience. Relevant experience should include equipment preservation, maintenance, field engineering, construction, materials management or commissioning in an industrial project environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret technical documents, organize an assigned field scope, identify deterioration risks and coordinate safe execution with multiple work groups. Clear written and verbal communication, accurate recordkeeping and practical problem-solving are essential.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Working knowledge of equipment storage and preservation principles, corrosion prevention, moisture and contamination control, and preservation interfaces for mechanical, electrical and instrumentation assets. Ability to read OEM manuals, drawings, equipment data sheets and applicable specifications, and recognize when specialist review is necessary.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets, asset registers and electronic document or maintenance systems. Ability to plan inspections, track recurring tasks, maintain evidence and communicate status against construction and commissioning milestones.
  • Experience on manufacturing or technology facility projects; familiarity with rotating and static equipment preservation, electrical and instrumentation storage requirements, vendor coordination, quality documentation and commissioning turnover. Experience coordinating subcontractors and managing preservation records across changing custody boundaries is advantageous.
  • Work with the Project Field Engineer, discipline field engineers, construction supervision, materials management, warehouse personnel, procurement, vendors, subcontractors, quality, environmental/safety/health personnel and commissioning teams. Coordinate with the client or operations custodian through established project channels.
  • Within delegated authority, prioritize assigned inspections, coordinate approved tasks, maintain the register and recommend corrective actions. Escalate technical conflicts, significant deterioration, missed requirements and resource constraints. Do not approve design changes, waive OEM requirements, authorize deviations or make commercial commitments without the required approval.
  • This role does not independently authorize energized work, equipment test operations, pressure changes or removal of safety controls. Such activities require approved procedures, qualified and authorized personnel, and applicable permits and isolations. Raise unsafe conditions immediately and follow project stop-work and escalation requirements.
  • Perform field walkdowns in warehouses, laydown areas and active construction or installation areas. Duties may involve walking on uneven terrain, using stairs and approved access systems, and exposure to weather, dust and noise. Follow site training, personal protective equipment and access requirements. Site presence, travel or adjusted work hours may be required according to project needs. Essential functions are performed with or without reasonable accommodation; HR and the project should validate the applicable site requirements
