The Heart Failure Intensive Care Unit at Cleveland Clinic features 10 private beds and cares for adults with complex and advanced heart failure. The unit cares for patients with ongoing medical conditions, including those awaiting heart transplant or needing intensive medical care. Nurses provide specialized treatments and closely monitor patients’ condition. Some patients may require advanced support, including mechanical ventilation, intra-aortic balloon pumps, or left ventricular assist devices. The unit also cares for adolescent and adult patients with pulmonary hypertension who require specialized monitoring and treatment.

As a new graduate RN on this unit, you will have the opportunity to grow your skills while caring for patients with complex conditions. You will receive specialized ICU and device training that will help you build confidence and strengthen your critical-thinking skills. Working in the Heart Failure ICU will allow you to learn how to care for critically ill patients, gain experience with advanced therapies and technology, and work closely with an experienced interdisciplinary team. This environment will challenge you to learn, grow, and develop the skills needed to become a confident and well-rounded ICU nurse.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Participate in a residency core curriculum based on individual learning needs.  

  • Provide direct nursing care alongside a success coach.  

  • Establish and/or revise priorities for patient care (acuity of need, patient preference and resource availability).  

  • Respond to data indicating risk to patients’ health and initiate action to correct, reduce or prevent risk.  

  • Seek supervision, consultation and assistance when unable to perform safely and independently.  

  • Document in patients’ medical records

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Professional Nursing   

  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) OR the American Red Cross  

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) OR the American Red Cross upon hire or first year of employment

  • New grad or less than one year RN work experience or if experience RN moving from non-inpatient to acute direct care clinical inpatient setting with less than one year current acute direct patient care RN experience. 

 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Bachelor of science in nursing (BSN)
