The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the established and highly regarded North East Mental Health Inpatient Occupational Therapy Service based at Stobhill Mental Health Campus. Working as a Specialist Occupational Therapist, you will provide expert occupational therapy assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for patients across a range of mental health care groups. The role involves working independently with complex and challenging cases while providing specialist clinical leadership within the designated service area. You will contribute to service development, clinical governance, departmental projects and the supervision of junior staff and students, while working closely with the wider multidisciplinary team to support recovery and discharge planning.

36 Hours - Monday to Friday 8.30-4.30pm (RWW 36 hours)

Key Responsibilities

You will independently manage a complex caseload, providing specialist occupational therapy assessment, intervention and evaluation on both an individual and group basis. Working within a multidisciplinary and multi-agency environment, you will identify service users' occupational needs, develop person-centred care plans and contribute to mental health assessments, care management and discharge planning. You will utilise specialist and standardised assessment tools, provide expert advice to colleagues, carers and partner agencies, and act as a specialist clinical resource within the service. The post holder will play a key role in service evaluation, quality improvement initiatives, clinical governance activities and departmental projects. You will also provide supervision and support to junior staff and students, contribute to staff education, maintain accurate clinical records and statistical information, and ensure practice aligns with current legislation, professional standards and national policies.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

Essential

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy.
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Must hold, or be willing to obtain, a Practice Education Qualification.
  • Up-to-date mandatory and statutory training record (e.g. Fire Safety, Moving and Handling).
  • Specialist occupational therapy knowledge and experience within mental health services.
  • Highly developed communication, assessment, observation and risk management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage clinical priorities.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development relevant to the role.
  • Knowledge of occupational therapy assessments, interventions and outcome measures.
  • Understanding of occupational therapy models of practice across physical and mental health.
  • Knowledge of relevant health and social care legislation and its application.
  • Ability to build effective networks across services and agencies.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage complex information.
  • Leadership and supervisory skills, including supporting junior staff.
  • Experience of audit and quality improvement activity.
  • Knowledge and application of clinical governance principles.
  • Knowledge of adaptive equipment and its application in practice.
  • Basic IT skills and experience of electronic systems.
  • Full driving licence essential.

Desirable

  • Membership of the British Association of Occupational Therapists (BAOT).
  • Ability to analyse professional and ethical issues and respond appropriately.
  • Critical appraisal skills and ability to apply research findings in practice.
  • Experience of participating in research activities.
