Overview

Keywords: Sourcing Portfolio Manager, Power Generation, Leadership, Communication

Key Takeaways

  • Role Focus: The role centers on managing sourcing for diverse power generation assets with direct engagement with senior leadership.
  • Candidate Requirements: Candidates must have executive presence, power generation knowledge, people leadership, and category management experience.
  • Leadership Style: A hands-on, engaged, and proactive communicator who supports and leads the team without micromanaging is preferred.
  • Challenges: Key challenges include limited supplier pools, complex sourcing needs, and ensuring clear communication and status updates.

Key Participants

  • Ciara (AgileOne Enterprise crew): Host and facilitator
  • Christine Zabe (Hiring Manager): Oversees Diablo Canyon, nuclear services contracts, and power generation portfolios
  • Jay Reloj (PG&E Recruitment): Addressed recruitment logistics

Role Summary: Sourcing Portfolio Manager

Core Responsibilities

  • Primary interface for PG&E’s power generation team, working in procurement but engaging directly with senior power generation leadership (e.g., VP, directors).
  • Team management: Lead 4 category leaders (with potential for team growth via contractors).
  • Scope: Sourcing for a diverse set of power generation assets, including hydro, natural gas, solar, and battery facilities.
  • Location: Based primarily at Auburn Resource Center (power gen HQ), with some hybrid flexibility but expectation for significant in-office presence.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications

  • Executive presence: Ability to engage confidently with senior leaders.
  • Power generation knowledge: Must understand basic power systems (e.g., transformers, turbines, generators) or have the ability to learn quickly.
    • Example: Should not require basic explanations of equipment.
  • People leadership: Demonstrated experience managing teams, ideally in a remote/distributed environment.
  • Category management: Familiarity with competitive bidding, sourcing strategies, and supporting category leaders.

Preferred Experience

  • Industry flexibility: Sourcing experience from other industries is welcome.
  • Certifications: Not required, but MBA, Six Sigma, project management, SAP, or Lean experience are considered a plus.
    • Example: Familiarity with Lean language is advantageous due to PG&E’s operating model.

Leadership & Communication

  • Leadership style: Hands-on, engaged, not a micromanager; able to dive into workload projections and rebalance priorities.
    • Example: Willing to work alongside the team to ensure progress.
  • Communication: Strong “over-communicator” preferred; must provide proactive status updates and escalate issues without prompting.

Disqualifiers

  • No people management experience
  • No familiarity with power generation

Team Structure

  • Current direct reports: 4 category leaders
    • 2 tenured in category management
    • 1 tenured at PG&E (contracts experience, new to category management)
    • 1 new hire (energy industry, strong in category management, less PG&E experience)
  • Growth: Team may expand via contract resources as project demands increase.

Performance Metrics

  • 30/60/90 days: Measured by standard sourcing KPIs (value delivery, timeliness), with an emphasis on meeting deadlines due to operational urgency.

Challenges & Pain Points

  • Supply chain risk: Limited supplier pool and market data for power generation components.
    • Example: Unlike common commodities, sourcing for specialized powerhouse components is complex.
  • Communication gaps: Previous incumbent struggled with providing clear status updates amid a heavy project load.
  • Learning curve: Need to quickly understand work, key players, and incumbent supplier performance.

Additional Logistics

Relocation

  • Relocation assistance: Available; expectation for timely transition to Auburn area.

Compensation

  • Salary range: Up to $226,000 posted; preference to hire between minimum and midpoint for growth potential. Maximum only in exceptional cases.

Work Authorization

  • H-1B transfer: Not typically considered for this role.

Q&A Highlights

  • Red flags: No team leadership or power generation experience.
  • Industry background: Open to candidates from other sectors.
  • Certifications: Not mandatory but valued.
  • Leadership style: Engaged, collaborative, non-micromanaging.
  • Communication: Must be proactive and transparent.
  • Incumbent transition: Current manager will stay until replacement is up to speed.
  • Recurring challenges: Communication and status updates, supplier market limitations.
  • Relocation and start: Flexibility, but prompt transition expected.
  • Compensation flexibility: Room for negotiation, but not at the posted maximum.
  • Visa sponsorship: Not standard for this role.

Conclusion

The ideal Sourcing Portfolio Manager will combine technical familiarity with power generation, hands-on leadership, and strong communication skills to manage a diverse, partly remote team and navigate complex sourcing challenges. The role is critical, with a focus on timely project delivery and effective stakeholder engagement.
