Summary
Under the direction of the respective Director of Pharmacy, the Pharmacy Manager oversees clinical and operational pharmacy services within an assigned area, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant medication use and adequate staffing. The manager implements programs, services, and quality improvement initiatives that support departmental goals and high-quality patient care. The manager supervises staff, manages day-to-day operations, and monitors performance metrics aligned with organizational and departmental priorities, including participation in the ANTHC balanced scorecard. This role ensures adherence to regulatory, accreditation, and safety standards and supports continuous improvement efforts. The manager develops, implements, and maintains operational policies and procedures for assigned services and collaborates with pharmacy leadership and interdisciplinary teams to support internal operations and external coordination as needed. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating pharmacy services within the assigned scope. This is a working manager position with regular participation in pharmacy operations and clinical activities to remain current with workflows and support patient care.
Responsibilities
The Manager provides leadership, and operational oversight for assigned pharmacy services. The manager is also expected to maintain operational proficiency by participating in direct pharmacy operations and clinical activities as needed to support patient care, staff development, workflow demands, implementation of new services, and business continuity.
Serve as Pharmacist in Charge of their respective pharmacy.
Implements workforce plans that align with departmental and organizational goals; manages staffing, scheduling, and daily personnel needs within the assigned area.
Identifies, implements, and monitors process improvement initiatives to support the development and validation of pharmacy services and operations.
Maintains systems to track and report quality, safety, and performance metrics for assigned services.
Manages daily operations and supports short- and mid-range planning for the assigned area; schedules and oversees assigned staff.
Maintains regular participation in direct pharmacy operations and, as applicable, clinical care activities to support patient care, staff development, workflow demands, and implementation of new services within the assigned area.
Assumes the responsibilities of the Director of Pharmacy in their absence and assists in performing supervisory and management functions for the pharmacy department in coordination with pharmacy leadership.
Performs clinical pharmaceutical care for pharmacy patients in collaboration with other pharmacists, physicians, other healthcare providers and patients in an accurate and timely manner.
Manages inventory of controlled and non-controlled substances, ensuring compliance, accountability, and fiscal responsibility.
Reviews and authorizes pharmacy technician activities. Responsible for any delegated act performed by pharmacy technicians.
Prepares and maintains operational reports, including activity, quality improvement, and financial metrics; contributes to budget development, service planning, and performance reporting as requested.
Supports and maintains pharmacy information systems and automated dispensing technologies, ensuring functionality, security, and operational effectiveness.
Participates in and leads interdepartmental committees and initiatives to advance pharmacy practice and patient care standards.
Leads and executes assigned projects within the department or service area, coordinating with interdisciplinary teams to achieve defined objectives.
Ensures compliance with the regulatory and practice standards of pharmaceutical care.
Implements departmental goals and priorities by assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and ensuring accountability within the team.
Supports staff development through training, coaching, performance evaluations, and corrective action as needed.
Contributes to workforce development efforts, including recruitment, onboarding, and retention activities, in collaboration with pharmacy leadership and human resources.
Utilizes data and performance metrics to inform operational decisions and improve service delivery; prepares reports and summaries for leadership review.
Supports pharmacy emergency preparedness, crisis response, and disaster recovery plans, ensuring continuous operational integrity for the assigned area.
Provides operational leadership and decision-making within the assigned scope, escalating issues as appropriate to pharmacy leadership.
Performs duties reflecting team-oriented approaches and embodies ANTHC Core values, always maintaining professionalism.
Manages projects and performs other duties as assigned or required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
A Doctorate degree in Pharmacy (BS for candidates who were licensed under the BS License requirement) from an accredited college program.
Minimum Experience Qualification
Non-supervisory – Five (5) years of pharmacy experience in a hospital, ambulatory, specialty, or comparable healthcare pharmacy setting.
AND
Supervisory – Two (2) years involving employee supervision.
Progressively responsible for professional work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis where appropriate.
MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
Current State of Alaska Pharmacy License or legal equivalent.
Preferred Education Qualification
Master's degree in Education, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field.
Preferred Experience Qualification
Experience in pharmacy operations management, including staffing, workflow oversight, and daily service delivery.
Experience with regulatory compliance and accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS), including controlled substance management.
Experience leading or supporting quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
Experience supervising and developing pharmacy staff and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to support medication use processes.
Experience in rural, Tribal, or underserved healthcare settings, preferably within the Alaska Tribal Health System.
Preferred Certification Qualification
Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) or other applicable Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification.
Residency training (PGY1 and/or PGY2).
Teaching certificate or formal educational training.
Additional Requirements
If exposure to hazardous materials and medications, sharp objects, and infectious diseases is present, must don appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Must operate within department’s appropriate engineering controls such as negative pressure storage rooms and compounding hoods.
Depending on the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain additional certifications or training in one or more specialty areas.
