Quantum Experimental Physicist – Neutral Atom Quantum Computing

Location: Japan (Relocation Support Available)

Language: English-speaking environment

Type: Full-Time

Sector: Quantum Computing | Deep Tech | Advanced Physics

Build the Future of Quantum Computing

An ambitious quantum computing startup is seeking an exceptional experimental physicist to join its growing hardware team. Working at the forefront of neutral-atom quantum computing, you will help develop next-generation quantum systems using laser cooling, optical tweezers, and Rydberg-based quantum gate technologies.

This is a unique opportunity to join a highly talented international team translating cutting-edge research into real-world quantum computing systems.

Applications are welcomed from candidates currently based anywhere in the world and some relocation support to Japan is available.

The Role

As a key member of the experimental quantum hardware team, you will design, build, and optimize complex quantum experiments while contributing directly to the development of scalable neutral-atom quantum processors.

You will work in a highly collaborative environment alongside physicists, engineers, and software specialists tackling some of the most challenging problems in quantum technology today.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute experiments for neutral-atom qubit control and manipulation
  • Build, align, stabilize, and optimize advanced laser and optical systems
  • Operate, maintain, and improve ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems
  • Implement and refine quantum gate operations to improve system performance and fidelity
  • Develop and enhance experimental control software and automation tools
  • Perform data analysis and experimental optimisation
  • Publish research findings in leading scientific journals
  • Present technical results at international conferences and workshops
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to accelerate hardware development

Required Experience

  • PhD in Experimental Physics, AMO Physics, Quantum Optics, Precision Measurement, or a related discipline
  • Alternatively, exceptional hands-on industrial experience in advanced quantum or photonics systems
  • Strong experience with:
  • Laser systems
  • Free-space optics
  • Optical alignment and stabilization
  • Practical experience operating ultra-high vacuum (UHV) equipment
  • Programming and data analysis skills using Python or equivalent scientific software tools
  • Proven record of scientific achievement through publications, conference presentations, or significant technical contributions

Desirable Experience

Candidates with experience in any of the following areas will be particularly attractive:

  • Neutral atom or cold atom platforms
  • Trapped-ion quantum systems
  • Optical lattices
  • Rydberg atom manipulation
  • Optical tweezer arrays
  • AOMs, EOMs, RF electronics, and low-noise instrumentation
  • FPGA development and real-time control systems
  • Experimental quantum hardware development
  • International research collaborations
  • English-language scientific publishing
  • Startup, scale-up, or fast-paced R&D environments

What's On Offer

  • Opportunity to work on one of the world's most advanced quantum computing technologies
  • International, English-speaking research environment
  • Significant technical ownership and influence over hardware development
  • Competitive compensation package
  • Relocation to Japan
  • Career-defining opportunity within a rapidly growing deep-tech sector
  • Direct contribution to the development of a scalable quantum computing platform

Ideal Candidate

You are an experimental physicist who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and thrives in highly innovative environments. You combine strong hands-on laboratory expertise with a passion for turning breakthrough science into transformative technology.

Whether you are currently working in academia, a national laboratory, or the quantum industry, this role offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the future of quantum computing.
