Power Electronics Engineer – SiC, GaN and Solid-State Transformers
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
Salary: Up to £62,000 + relocation paid
KO2's client is a fast-growing technology company developing high-voltage server systems for quantum analytics. They're expanding their hardware team and are looking for a Power Electronics Engineer with wide-bandgap experience to help design their next generation of high-power conversion systems.
You'll design and develop high-power conversion systems rated at 10 kW and above, covering AC-AC, DC-DC and DC-AC platforms. Your work will span simulation and modelling, prototyping, testing and validation, through to supporting certification.
The role focuses on wide-bandgap technology. You'll work with medium- and high-voltage silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) devices, and you'll help develop solid-state transformer (SST) architectures. You'll have a central part in shaping the company's power hardware as it grows.
Key responsibilities
- Design high-power converters using MV/HV SiC and GaN switching devices
- Develop solid-state transformer (SST) architectures, or take a leading part in them
- Model and simulate converter designs in PLECS or similar, and use PCB CAD tools such as CADSTAR
- Carry out functional, thermal and electrical testing of prototypes
- Run EMC and power compliance testing, and design in fixes for any issues found
- Write technical documentation and safety files to support approvals and certification
Essential skills and experience
- Hands-on design experience with medium- or high-voltage SiC power devices
- Practical experience designing with GaN devices
- Experience of solid-state transformers, or the ability to take on SST design. This could come from related high-frequency isolated conversion work such as DAB or resonant converters
- A strong background in power electronics design, control methods and system simulation
- Experience of analogue and digital circuit development
- A good understanding of switching devices, gate drive, thermal design and magnetics
- An understanding of embedded control and EMC behaviour in high-power systems
Desirable experience
- High-power product development in energy, grid, industrial or data-centre applications
- Experience of high-frequency transformer and magnetics design for isolated converters
- Knowledge of insulation coordination and safety standards for MV/HV equipment
What's on offer
- A salary of up to £62,500
- Full visa sponsorship for the right candidate
- The chance to work on advanced wide-bandgap and SST technology
- A key role in a fast-growing company, with real influence over its hardware
