The Position: Principal Mechanical & Piping Engineer
We are seeking a Principal Mechanical and Piping Engineer to join our expanding engineering and design consultancy. This role is central to delivering high-quality Mechanical and Piping design scope across a diverse portfolio of both single and multi-discipline industrial and energy projects.
This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who can lead projects, work seamlessly within a multidisciplinary environment, and engage confidently with clients, vendors, and internal teams.
Some of the main responsibilities of the Principal Mechanical & Piping Engineer will include:
- Lead and oversee the development, review and approval of mechanical and piping engineering deliverables, including design philosophies, specifications, datasheets, material requisitions, piping class specifications, line lists, equipment layouts, piping layouts, isometrics and associated engineering documentation.
- Take technical authority for the mechanical and piping scope across projects, ensuring compliance with applicable industry codes, standards and client requirements, including ASME, API, BS EN and relevant pressure systems legislation.
- Lead the design and specification of static and rotating equipment, piping systems, pressure vessels, storage tanks and associated mechanical infrastructure, ensuring safe, reliable, maintainable and cost-effective engineering solutions.
- Review, verify and approve mechanical and piping engineering documentation to ensure technical accuracy, quality, consistency and compliance with project requirements, company procedures and relevant industry standards.
- Develop and implement solutions to complex mechanical and piping engineering challenges, working collaboratively with process, electrical, control and structural disciplines, and leading discipline input to design reviews, constructability assessments and technical assurance activities.
- Perform or oversee mechanical integrity assessments, piping stress evaluations, equipment selection, material specification and constructability reviews to ensure long-term asset reliability and operational performance.
- Act as the principal mechanical and piping technical interface with clients, vendors, fabricators, contractors and other stakeholders, leading technical discussions, resolving complex engineering issues, clarifying requirements and supporting key project decisions.
- Lead technical evaluations of vendor proposals, equipment packages and contractor deliverables, ensuring alignment with project specifications, operational requirements and lifecycle performance objectives.
- Provide mentoring, guidance and technical coaching to junior and senior mechanical engineers and designers, fostering a culture of engineering excellence, safety, quality, compliance and continuous professional development within the Mechanical & Piping team.
Preferred Profile:
We are looking for individuals who can bring the following skills and experience:
- Experience of leading mechanical and/or piping deliverables in an EPC project environment, ideally from an engineering and design consultancy setting.
- Have previously delivered design packages across Concept, FEED and Detailed Design for Oil & Gas, Energy, COMAH, Industrial, or similar projects.
- Strong understanding of piping layout, routing and modelling with knowledge of relevant codes, standards and industry practices.
- Comfortable coordinating with multidisciplinary design teams, and confident engaging with EPC contractors & owners / operators.
- Brownfield or modification project exposure is an advantage.
- Ideally, a Chartered Engineer working towards (IMechE ideal).
- Reside locally to Pembrokeshire or be prepared to relocate, as this permanent role does not include travel expense coverage.
