About the Opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Research Fellow or Principal Research Fellow, Digital Forests to join the Australian Forest and Wood Innovations (AFWI) Centre for Sustainable Resource and Product Solutions. This fixed-term appointment offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of digital forest monitoring and inventory across Australia.

Over the next four years, you will help bridge the gap between emerging sensing technologies and their practical application in forest management, planning and reporting. Working at the intersection of research, technology and industry, you will lead the development of innovative approaches using multi-sensor lidar, imaging analytics and geospatial data to improve forest inventory, monitoring and decision-making.

We welcome applications from individuals with deep expertise in digital forestry, remote sensing, geospatial analytics, environmental data science or related disciplines. While a PhD is valued, we recognise that expertise can be developed through a variety of career pathways. We

The successful candidate will bring a strong track record of translating technical innovation into practical outcomes and working collaboratively with stakeholders to address real-world challenges in forest inventory, monitoring and management. You will have demonstrated leadership experience, including leading projects and teams, building productive partnerships, mentoring others, securing funding or commercial work, and delivering outcomes across complex organisational environments.

We are seeking a leader who can bridge the gap between emerging technologies and industry adoption, engaging confidently with both technical specialists and operational decision-makers.

Salary Details

Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level C or D and will have a total remuneration package of up to $210,621 comprising base salary within the range of $138,536 to $180,018 plus 17% superannuation. Relocation support may be available to the successful candidate, helping make a move to Tasmania as seamless as possible.
