Position Overview
The Resilience Coordinator works collaboratively with KANA programs, Tribal partners, and Traditional Knowledge Holders to develop projects and partnerships that strengthen community resilience through environmental adaptation, emergency preparedness, and culturally grounded initiatives across the Kodiak region. This position coordinates community resilience planning and identifies opportunities to develop new programs; facilitates workshops, training events, and knowledge-sharing opportunities; and works with KANA administration and leadership to identify future funding opportunities to support projects and initiatives that strengthen community resilience in the Kodiak region. This position will also administer an initiative to contract with Cultural Partners/Traditional Knowledge holders to ensure that cultural health and wellness play a vital role in climate change assessment and adaptation. This is a term-limited position funded through grant support.
Key Responsibilities
- Develops and supports collaborations and projects with other KANA programs to achieve program and association goals of assisting beneficiaries.
- Partners with KANA’s Environmental Liaison to support Kodiak’s communities and tribes in developing and/or updating disaster and emergency preparedness plans by coordinating and facilitating workshops, training, and other curriculum delivery events that support plan development, close knowledge gaps, and address tribal and community-specific priorities.
- Coordinates with departments and teams to develop and refine RFP templates and procedures for Traditional Knowledge Holders, with the goal of strengthening cross-team collaboration and ensuring processes are accessible, consistent, and responsive to community needs.
- Works cooperatively to develop, release, and support the evaluation and award of RFPs that fund events and activities led by Traditional Knowledge Holders and experts in the City of Kodiak and village communities. Funded activities will share Alutiiq knowledge, language, harvesting practices, and other traditional practices while supporting environmental adaptation, community resilience, and emergency planning.
- Collaborates across KANA’s Environmental team to identify relevant topics and support cross-team efforts.
- Helps build and maintain partnerships with agencies, outside partners, and contractors to facilitate project or program success. Works closely with Kodiak Tribes and project partners to strengthen community resilience work in the region. Assists in identifying other potential partners. Supports culturally grounded, community-led approaches through respectful engagement with Tribal partners and Traditional Knowledge holders
- Develops strategies for future programs and services based on identified priorities. Identifies, evaluates, and supports applications for additional funding to enhance the lives of KANA beneficiaries through programs and projects.
- Attends meetings with ANTHC and other partners to discuss progress, lessons learned, and challenges encountered in organizationally relevant and statewide efforts. Attends Technical Assistance sessions held by ANTHC with Interior and Northwestern regional communities.
- Assists in handling projects to ensure scope, resource needs, tracking mechanisms, implementation or business models, and desired outcomes are documented and in compliance with funder requirements.
- Provides support for geospatial assessments related to environmental adaptation and resilience, including data review, community needs identification, and data gap identification to inform preparedness planning efforts.
- Travels to villages and off-island. Some weekend and evening work for scheduled events and Tribal meetings
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Indigenous Studies, Project Management, or a related field with 2 years of working experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Work Schedule
KANA’s standard work schedule is 37.5 working hours per week, consisting of 7.5 paid working hours per day plus a one-hour unpaid lunch break (8.5 hours on site per day).
