Show job description

Our client is an early-stage Berlin-based technology company building a safety layer for robots that work alongside people. Their approach combines multimodal sensing with deterministic safeguards, and it can be retrofitted to existing systems, embedded in new ones, and used with different robot controllers. The team is small and senior, and the product is moving from thesis to first commercial deployments.

Why this role matters

Certification is what turns a promising product into industry infrastructure. As the first dedicated safety hire, you will own the safety case from component to product to cell level, in support of customer applications. You will lead the company’s first CE marking under EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 with a notified body. The decisions you make in your first months will shape the certification path for years.

What you will do

  • Own the safety case end to end, at component, product, and cell level
  • Run FMEDA, FTA, HAZOP, and STPA across customer deployments
  • Lead the first CE marking under Regulation 2023/1230 with the notified body
  • Build the safety argumentation: safety goals, functional and technical safety requirements, and full traceability
  • Act as the technical authority with customers, integrators, and regulators

Must have

  • 6+ years in functional safety engineering, including at least one shipped SIL2 / PLd program
  • Deep working knowledge of IEC 61508 (SIL determination, lifecycle) and ISO 13849 (PLd, categories, DC, MTTFd, CCF)
  • Working knowledge of IEC 62998, Regulation 2023/1230 conformity assessment, and relevant robotics standards
  • One of: CSME, TÜV SÜD FSCP, TÜV Rheinland FS Engineer, or exida CFSE
  • Hands-on experience with at least two of: Sistema, Ansys medini analyze, ISOGraph, Polarion, DOORS, LDRA, Vector

Strong signals

  • Contribution to standards working groups (ISO TC 299, IEC TC 44, ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42, UL 4600)
  • A published safety case using CAE or GSN
  • Experience bridging ISO 26262 (ASIL) with IEC 61508 / ISO 13849 in one architecture
  • A shipped perception-based safety function at SIL2 or PLd
  • Experience with SOTIF (ISO 21448) and ISO/PAS 8800 (AI safety)

Nice to have

  • Direct experience working with a notified or certification body
  • German language skills

What’s on offer

  • A core-team role with real ownership of both what is built and how
  • Direct exposure to deployments with leading robotics partners from day one
  • Employee participation (ESOP), with terms agreed individually
  • Visa sponsorship and relocation support within Europe where needed
  • A fast process: intro call, technical conversation, deep-dive session (onsite or remote), then an offer, typically within 2 to 3 weeks
