This role leads construction safety efforts on a major, large-scale civil and excavation project at a semiconductor manufacturing site in Clay, NY. The Safety Professional develops, implements, and monitors project safety programs, partners closely with contractors and project teams, and uses data-driven tools to prevent incidents and promote a strong safety culture. The position focuses on heavy civil work, including excavation, concrete, trenching, earthwork, and underground utilities and electrical systems, and plays a key role in building and guiding a new safety team for expanding project scopes.
Responsibilities- Support all safety efforts on the project and actively promote a strong safety culture across all teams.
- Ensure contractor activities are preplanned for safety through scope reviews, preconstruction meetings, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Safe Task Analyses (STAs), and related planning tools.
- Verify that contractors meet all required safety submittal requirements and documentation standards.
- Ensure contractor compliance with the project safety plan, procedures, and expectations.
- Maintain all safety-related documentation in an accurate, organized, and timely manner.
- Identify and evaluate situations that may be hazardous to employee safety or health and make clear, actionable recommendations for corrective measures.
- Utilize SafetyNet or similar safety management systems to audit and monitor project team implementation of the safety plan.
- Perform at least 15 SafetyNet inspections per month, documenting a minimum of 100 observations in each inspection.
- Prepare, provide, and analyze SafetyNet trending reports with the project team and develop action plans based on the findings.
- Coach project team members on effective hazard identification, risk assessment, and timely correction of safety issues using SafetyNet and other tools.
- Investigate all accidents and near misses, determine root causes, and complete all required reports and documentation.
- Ensure project teams have appropriate safety equipment, tools, and resources to perform work safely.
- Serve as the project liaison with insurance carriers and manage project correspondence related to safety and risk.
- Provide safety training to project teams on internal safety requirements, client expectations, and OSHA regulations.
- Train direct reports on safety processes, procedures, and daily tasks to ensure consistent and compliant execution.
- Manage the workload and performance of direct reports, ensuring alignment with company standards and project objectives.
- Foster a positive and inclusive work environment that motivates and engages safety team members and field personnel.
- Assist in communicating company and department strategies to direct reports and broader project teams.
- Collaborate closely with business development to align safety performance and metrics with sales strategies, project pursuits, and client deliverables.
- Actively participate in building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, partners, and industry stakeholders to help position the organization as a builder of choice.
- 47 years of construction safety management experience, preferably on large-scale civil, trenching, earthwork, or heavy excavation projects.
- Bachelors degree in Occupational Safety Management or Engineering preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- BCSP credential such as CSP, ASP, or CHST (CSP preferred; ASP or CHST strongly valued).
- Certification and authorization by appropriate governing bodies and OSHA to teach safety courses to employees and contractors.
- Comprehensive knowledge of construction safety and health principles, techniques, methods, and best practices.
- Strong understanding of applicable safety regulations, including OSHA standards and their interpretations.
- Ability to identify current and potential future exposures and recommend effective corrective actions.
- Proficiency with SafetyNet or similar safety management and auditing systems.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for training, reporting, and coordination with project teams and stakeholders.
- Developing management and leadership skills, including the ability to lead, coach, and evaluate direct reports.
- Experience in construction safety within environments involving excavation, civil work, concrete, and underground utilities and electrical systems.
- Background in civil construction, trenching, earthwork, or large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Experience with construction management environments and coordination among multiple contractors and stakeholders.
- BCSP credentials such as CSP, ASP, or CHST beyond minimum requirements are highly regarded.
- Osha 500 or similar advanced OSHA training credentials.
- Experience providing safety training to diverse audiences, including employees and contractors.
- Familiarity with performance metrics related to safety and their integration into business development and client reporting.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with business development teams to support project pursuits and client relationships.
- Strong organizational skills to manage documentation, inspections, and reporting across multiple work fronts.
- Demonstrated ability to foster a positive, inclusive, and team-oriented safety culture.
This role is based onsite in Clay, New York, at the Micron project within White Pine Commerce Park on Route 31. The work environment centers on a large, complex construction site involving heavy civil activities such as excavation, trenching, earthwork, concrete work, and installation of underground utilities and electrical systems. The position requires regular field presence, interaction with multiple contractors, and frequent site inspections using tools such as SafetyNet and standard construction technologies. Travel may be required, with a preference for candidates located in or willing to relocate to the Northeast; travel support and relocation assistance may be available. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $48.08 - $69.71/hr.
