Scientific Software Engineer for Research Software Engineering Group

The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of Europe’s largest research infrastructure projects and is building the world’s most powerful neutron source. Through cutting-edge science and technology, ESS will enable discoveries that advance our understanding of materials, energy, health, and the environment.

About the role

The Research Software Engineering (RSE) group develops and maintains critical software systems that make neutron scattering experiments at ESS possible and successful.

As a Scientific Software Engineer, you will contribute to the development of key platforms supporting the scientific user journey, including the ESS User Portal, metadata catalogue, electronic notebook, and related scientific information systems. You will work closely with scientists, software engineers, and stakeholders across ESS to gather requirements, understand user needs, and develop robust software solutions that integrate seamlessly with the wider ESS ecosystem.

The RSE group uses modern web technologies and software engineering practices to deliver high-quality software with a long operational lifetime. In addition, the group is expanding its focus on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning solutions that can enhance the scientific user experience. As part of this effort, you will contribute to new AI-related initiatives and help establish RSE as a centre of expertise and development for AI applications within the Science Directorate.

This position is well suited for an experienced software engineer with a strong technical foundation, excellent collaboration skills, and a passion for building software that enables world-class scientific research.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software systems supporting the scientific user journey at ESS.
  • Contribute to the development of the ESS User Portal, metadata catalogue, electronic notebook, and related scientific information management systems.
  • Gather, analyse, and refine requirements from scientific and technical stakeholders across ESS.
  • Design and implement integrations between RSE applications and other ESS services and platforms.
  • Apply modern software engineering practices to deliver reliable, maintainable, and high-quality software solutions.
  • Contribute to technical and process improvements within the SIMS group.
  • Participate in AI and Machine Learning initiatives supporting the Science Directorate.
  • Collaborate with scientists, software engineers, and international partners to develop innovative solutions for scientific computing and data management.
  • Provide technical guidance and knowledge sharing within the team when appropriate.
  • Contribute to software architecture discussions and technology decisions within the group.

Required qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Physics, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Typically 4-7 years of relevant professional experience in software development.
  • Experience developing modern web applications and services.
  • Strong programming skills and experience with modern software development practices.
  • Experience gathering requirements and working directly with stakeholders and end users.
  • Experience designing and implementing integrations between complex software systems.
  • Ability to work independently and manage technical tasks and projects with limited supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Desirable qualifications

  • Experience working with scientific software, research infrastructures, or data-intensive environments.
  • Experience with cloud-based services and distributed systems.
  • Experience with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies and their practical application.
  • Experience with user-facing platforms, portals, or information management systems.
  • Familiarity with modern DevOps practices, CI/CD, automated testing, and container technologies.
  • Experience working in international and multidisciplinary environments.
  • Experience contributing to open-source software projects.
