Contract Duration: 12 Months Contract with

Shift Structure: First Shift | Standard Daytime Business Hours (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM), Monday through Friday

Pay Rate: $73.00 - $75.00/hr on W2

Job Description: Our client is pioneering the next generation of autonomous machinery, advanced robotics, and intelligent crop solutions. We are seeking an experienced Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join their High-Value Crop (HVC) Product Engineering team in Urbandale, IA. In this hands-on, product-defining role, you will take advanced robotic, display, and machine control concepts from technology discovery (TDP) through to full production deployment (PDP). You will architect and write production-grade embedded software for in-cab displays and electronic control units across autonomous tractors and specialized machinery, utilizing embedded Linux, C/C++, Lua, QML UI, and Protobuf schema.

Key Responsibilities:

• Production Embedded Software Development: Architect, code, test, and release robust embedded applications for High-Value Crop (HVC) tractors and machines within a Linux runtime environment.
• Display & UI Engineering: Build responsive graphical user interfaces for John Deere in-cab displays using QML and Qt, integrating display logic with underlying vehicle controllers.
• Multi-Language Architecture: Write and maintain modular software components using C/C++, embedded C, Lua, and MATLAB / Simulink for vehicle control systems and automation algorithms.
• Sensor Handling & Serialization: Implement device drivers, sensor data processing algorithms, and telemetry communication pipelines using Protobuf (Protocol Buffers) schema and JSON.
• TDP to PDP Execution: Lead the conversion of exploratory proof-of-concept features from Technology Development Projects (TDP) into validated production platforms under the Product Delivery Process (PDP).
• Ecosystem Integration & Telemetry: Connect machine software with cloud telemetry platforms such as the John Deere Operations Center, collaborating with cross-functional software architects and robotics leads.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

• Experience Level: 5 to 8+ years of professional embedded software development experience with a track record of deploying software into physical machines or vehicles.
• Core Technical Stack: Proficiency programming in C, C++, and Lua within an Embedded Linux operating environment.
• Display & UI Development: Demonstrated experience developing interactive machine interfaces using QML / Qt.
• Data Interchange & Schemas: Hands-on experience working with Protocol Buffers (Protobuf) and JSON for inter-process and telemetry messaging.
• Cross-Platform & Systems Integration: 3+ years of experience integrating multi-controller systems, sensor suites, and simulation environments.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Stand-Out Skills (Preferred):

• Background in off-highway vehicles, agricultural equipment, High-Value Crop (orchard/vineyard) machinery, or autonomous robotics.
• Hands-on experience with MATLAB / Simulink model-based design and control algorithm simulation.
• Familiarity with the John Deere Operations Center ecosystem or precision agricultural telemetry.
• Practical knowledge of agricultural operations or farming workflows.
