The Role

You will join the surgical nursing team within Ward 24, a 30-bedded ward at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, working in a fast-paced environment and maintaining a high clinical standard of care. You will assist with the nursing care of patients under the supervision of a trained nurse, including basic care, reception, admission, transfer and discharge in accordance with procedures.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • This is a permanent post working 36 hours per week.
  • You will work these hours over Days, nights and weekends
  • You will be based at Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH), Corsebar Road, Paisley, PA2 9PN

Key Responsibilities

You will provide care and assistance with fluid and nutritional intake, observe and report changes in patients’ conditions to the nurse in charge, and assist patients who are unable to self-care with personal hygiene and dressing while adhering to manual handling procedures and policies. You will carry out and assist with minor investigations such as urinalysis, faecal occult blood testing and urine collections, reporting findings to the trained nurse. You will assist with maintaining accurate patient documentation, including fluid and Waterlow charts, and ensure documents are appropriately filed. You will also be responsible for cleaning and tidying clinical areas, equipment and storage cupboards, reporting any defects or concerns to the nurse in charge. The role includes maintaining adequate stocks of central and clinical supplies, excluding medicines, and assisting with the safe custody of patients’ personal belongings in line with organisational policy. You will be required to comply with all Health and Safety legislation and policies, particularly in relation to COSHH, Fire, Infection Control and Manual Handling. The role requires you to be forward-thinking, flexible and able to work effectively within a changing and dynamic environment, including day and night rotations and weekend working.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Knowledge of basic patient care and support needs.
  • Ability to assist with personal hygiene, dressing and other activities of daily living.
  • Understanding of safe manual handling procedures.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Awareness of Health and Safety requirements within a clinical environment.
  • Understanding of COSHH and Fire Safety procedures.
  • Ability to undertake basic clinical investigations such as urinalysis, faecal occult blood testing and urine collections, as required.
  • Ability to accurately complete patient documentation, including fluid and Waterlow charts.
  • Ability to recognise and report changes in a patient’s condition to the trained nurse.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary nursing team.
  • Ability to work flexibly across day and night shifts, including weekends.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient dignity, safety and confidentiality.
  • Ability to follow organisational policies, procedures and instructions.
