Position Overview:
The Senior Project Manager is an experienced structural engineer, project leader, and client-facing representative of Apex who manages large, complex, and/or high-profile structural engineering projects under the oversight of a Project Executive. The Senior Project Manager provides leadership across project teams and manages project scope, fee and budget, schedule, staffing, technical execution, coordination, client communication, and overall project performance.
Senior Project Managers are expected to anticipate project needs and risks, provide leadership to Project Managers and engineering teams, and develop strong relationships with clients and project partners. In addition to project delivery, Senior Project Managers play an active role in business development and marketing by strengthening existing client relationships, identifying new opportunities, supporting pursuits, and representing Apex within the industry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage large, complex, high-profile, and/or fast-paced structural engineering projects from project initiation through design, documentation, permitting, and construction under the oversight of a Project Executive.
- Take overall responsibility for project scope, fee and budget, schedule, staffing, deliverables, coordination, client communication, and execution strategy appropriate to the size and complexity of assigned projects.
- Establish project execution plans, schedules, staffing strategies, internal milestones, and priorities and adjust resources as project requirements change.
- Monitor project financial performance, staffing, progress, remaining effort, and overall project health and take proactive action to address performance concerns.
- Identify scope changes, additional services, contractual concerns, and other conditions that may affect project fee, schedule, staffing, or profitability and develop appropriate recommendations.
- Lead project teams that may include Project Managers, Associate Project Managers, Project Engineers, BIM/modeling team members, and technical specialists by establishing expectations, priorities, responsibilities, and accountability.
- Provide leadership and direction to Project Managers and Associate Project Managers and support them in making effective technical and project management decisions.
- Coordinate staffing and resource needs across multiple projects and teams in collaboration with Project Executives and other project leaders.
- Provide high-level technical leadership for complex structural analysis, design, modeling, constructability, coordination, and construction-related issues and serve as a technical resource for project teams.
- Oversee project deliverables and QA/QC processes to ensure technical accuracy, completeness, consistency, constructability, and compliance with project requirements and Apex standards.
- Lead coordination with architects, MEP/FP consultants, contractors, fabricators, owners, and other project participants and drive resolution of significant multidisciplinary coordination issues.
- Lead external project meetings and serve as a senior client-facing representative of Apex, communicating project status, technical requirements, schedule, risks, decisions, and proposed solutions.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients and project partners by understanding their priorities, anticipating project needs, and providing consistent, responsive, and dependable project delivery.
- Anticipate technical, coordination, schedule, staffing, financial, contractual, and client-related risks and develop strategies with the Project Executive and project team to address them.
- Escalate significant project risks, contractual concerns, financial issues, client concerns, or other matters requiring executive-level involvement and provide clear recommendations for resolution.
- Lead the development of project scopes, fee proposals, staffing plans, schedules, execution strategies, and additional service proposals for new and existing projects.
- Participate actively in business development and marketing efforts, including developing and maintaining client relationships, identifying new and repeat project opportunities, supporting proposals and interviews, and representing Apex at appropriate client and industry events.
- Contribute to client retention and business development by identifying opportunities within existing relationships and communicating potential opportunities to Apex leadership.
- Provide mentorship, leadership, and project management development to Project Managers, Associate Project Managers, Project Engineers, and other project team members.
- Establish expectations and provide constructive feedback to project leaders and team members regarding project execution, communication, technical quality, client service, and professional development.
- Participate in Apex Technical Advisory Groups and contribute to the continued improvement of engineering standards, project management practices, QA/QC procedures, technical resources, and project delivery processes.
- Identify recurring project challenges, lessons learned, and opportunities for improvement and help implement more effective project management and engineering practices across Apex.
- Promote consistency in project execution, client service, technical quality, and communication across project teams.
- Support Project Executives with broader resource planning, project portfolio discussions, client strategy, and other organizational initiatives as appropriate.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an accredited university.
- Master’s degree in Structural Engineering preferred.
- Typically ten or more years of relevant structural engineering experience, including significant project management experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Structural Engineer (SE) licensure required.
- Demonstrated experience independently managing large, complex, high-profile, and/or fast-paced structural engineering projects.
- Demonstrated experience managing project scope, fees and budgets, schedules, staffing, additional services, resource planning, and overall project financial performance.
- Advanced knowledge of structural engineering principles, structural systems, building codes, design standards, construction practices, and project delivery.
- Strong technical judgment and demonstrated ability to provide direction on complex structural analysis, design, constructability, coordination, and construction-related issues.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary project teams and coordinate the efforts of Project Managers, Associate Project Managers, engineers, BIM/modeling team members, and technical specialists.
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective leadership and project management guidance to Project Managers and Associate Project Managers.
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate project risks, evaluate potential impacts, develop appropriate solutions, and communicate significant issues and recommendations to project leadership.
- Advanced understanding of architectural, structural, MEP/FP, and other discipline construction documents and multidisciplinary coordination requirements.
- Demonstrated experience leading client and external project meetings and effectively communicating complex technical, project, contractual, and schedule-related matters.
- Strong understanding of professional services agreements, project scope, additional services, staffing, schedules, project progress, budgets, and financial performance.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships and contribute to client retention, repeat business, and continued client engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to develop project scopes, fees, staffing plans, schedules, and execution strategies for complex structural engineering projects.
- Demonstrated ability to identify business development opportunities, support pursuits and proposals, and represent Apex professionally with clients and industry contacts.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects, teams, priorities, and client relationships while maintaining accountability for quality, schedule, financial performance, and communication.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong leadership, organizational, analytical, decision-making, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to provide clear direction, constructive feedback, mentorship, and professional development support to project leaders and engineering staff.
