Job Description
Imagine shaping the Environmental, Health, and Safety strategy for a growing manufacturing operation where safety, operational excellence, and people are at the center of every decision. As our Senior EHS Manager, you'll provide strategic leadership while helping build the systems, capabilities, and culture needed to safely scale a complex manufacturing environment.
About the Role
As our Senior EHS Manager, you'll proactively lead the development and execution of our Environmental, Health, and Safety strategy, partnering closely with site leadership, employees, project teams, contractors, and regional stakeholders.
This role goes beyond regulatory compliance. You'll help embed EHS principles into the way we design, build, commission, and operate our facility. Bringing a strong project management background and a Human Performance mindset, you'll anticipate risk, strengthen organizational learning, and ensure EHS considerations are incorporated into major projects and operational decisions.
You'll lead at every level of the organization, from advising senior leaders to engaging directly with the workforce, while creating an environment where collaboration, continuous improvement, learning, and shared ownership for safety can thrive.
Core Responsibilities
- Serve as the senior EHS leader for the site, advising site and regional leadership on strategic EHS priorities, risk, and organizational readiness.
- Develop and execute a multi-year EHS roadmap that supports safe growth, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Lead EHS integration across facility ramp-ups, expansions, capital projects, equipment installations, construction, commissioning, and transition into steady-state operations.
- Apply strong project management disciplines to establish priorities, manage risks, coordinate stakeholders, and drive complex EHS initiatives from planning through execution.
- Embed safety considerations into equipment, process, and facility development to proactively identify and reduce risk.
- Lead, develop, and empower a high-performing EHS organization with strong technical capability and accountability.
- Champion Human Performance principles that promote learning, strengthen systems, and help teams identify and manage operational risk.
- Partner with employees, leaders, contractors, vendors, engineering teams, operations, and other functions to integrate EHS into everyday decision-making.
- Establish proactive and predictive approaches to safety performance, using data and insight to identify emerging risks and opportunities for improvement.
- Represent EHS in leadership forums and strategic project reviews, providing clear recommendations and influencing decisions at all levels of the organization.
Tasks
- Lead EHS workstreams for major capital projects, facility expansion, and equipment installations.
- Build project plans, establish milestones, identify risks and dependencies, and drive accountability for critical EHS deliverables.
- Coach leaders and teams on Human Performance, proactive risk management, and effective learning from events and operational experience.
- Partner with engineering and project teams to review equipment and process designs and ensure EHS requirements are considered throughout project development and implementation.
- Develop and maintain effective contractor and vendor EHS strategies, expectations, and performance standards.
- Use leading and lagging indicators, risk assessments, and operational insights to identify trends and strengthen preventive actions.
- Build strong relationships across the site, creating alignment between EHS, operations, engineering, maintenance, people functions, and leadership.
- Engage directly with employees to understand operational realities, identify improvement opportunities, and strengthen the connection between EHS strategy and day-to-day work.
- Develop the capability of the EHS team through coaching, succession planning, performance management, and technical development.
- Communicate complex EHS risks and priorities clearly to both frontline employees and senior leadership.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive Environmental, Health, and Safety experience within manufacturing, industrial, engineering, or similarly complex operational environments.
- Significant leadership experience within EHS, including responsibility for leading and developing teams.
- Proven experience supporting or leading large-scale facility start-ups, expansions, capital projects, commissioning activities, or significant operational transformations.
- Demonstrated project management experience, with the ability to lead complex, cross-functional initiatives involving multiple stakeholders, priorities, risks, and dependencies.
- Strong understanding of EHS management principles and their application within complex manufacturing or industrial operations.
- Experience applying Human Performance principles or similar learning-focused safety approaches within an operational environment.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and lead at all levels, including senior leadership, functional leaders, project teams, and frontline employees.
- Highly collaborative leadership style with the ability to build trust, create alignment, and influence outcomes without relying solely on positional authority.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, stakeholder management, and decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated growth mindset with a commitment to learning, continuous improvement, and developing both individual and organizational capability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or advanced degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional EHS certification such as CSP, CIH, CHMM, or comparable credential is desired.
- Formal project management education, certification, or demonstrated experience leading complex capital or operational projects.
- Experience implementing Human Performance or learning-focused safety methodologies.
- Experience supporting greenfield manufacturing operations, major facility expansions, or large-scale operational ramp-ups.
- Experience working within highly automated, advanced manufacturing, consumer products, or other complex industrial environments.
- Experience working across regional or global organizations and collaborating with geographically dispersed stakeholders.
- Experience developing proactive EHS analytics, risk indicators, or data-driven approaches to risk prevention.
What You'll Build
You'll help build an EHS organization and culture designed for long-term growth. You'll establish scalable systems, strengthen Human Performance capabilities, develop EHS talent, and integrate risk management into projects and operational decisions.
Through strong project leadership and collaboration, you'll help move the organization beyond reactive compliance toward proactive risk management, learning, and continuous improvement.
Life on the Team
You'll work alongside leaders, engineers, project teams, operations, maintenance, contractors, and employees across the organization. Success in this environment depends on relationships as much as technical expertise.
You'll need to be comfortable leading up, leading across, and leading with the broader employee population, adjusting your approach based on the audience while maintaining clear expectations and a consistent commitment to EHS.
This is an environment for a leader who is curious, collaborative, willing to challenge constructively, and equally willing to listen and learn.
What Success Looks Like
Success means creating an EHS organization that is trusted, proactive, and deeply connected to the operation.
You'll establish strong EHS foundations for continued growth, successfully integrate safety into major projects and facility development, strengthen Human Performance capabilities, and build productive partnerships across the organization. You'll develop a team capable of anticipating risk and helping the business make informed decisions while maintaining a strong focus on people, learning, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.
