Staff Nurse - Emergency Department

The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Staff Nurse to join the Emergency Department at the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC). This is a fast-paced and rewarding role within a busy emergency care environment, providing high-quality care to children and young people with a wide range of medical, surgical, orthopaedic and specialty conditions. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team across all areas of the department, including Triage, Minors, Majors and Resuscitation, while supporting patients and their families throughout their care journey.

Key Responsibilities

As a member of the multidisciplinary team, you will be responsible for assessing patient care needs, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care to ensure the delivery of safe, effective and person-centred care. You will provide nursing care across all areas of the Emergency Department, including the administration of medications, intravenous therapies and emergency interventions once deemed competent. The role involves caring for patients with a wide variety of illnesses, injuries and conditions, maintaining accurate clinical documentation, supporting patients and families, contributing to multidisciplinary decision-making, participating in audit and quality improvement activities, and promoting a family-centred approach to care. In the absence of the Senior Charge Nurse or deputy, you may be required to provide support to ensure the effective operation of the clinical area.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

Essential

• Registered Nurse (Child Branch) or Registered Sick Children's Nurse (RSCN).
• Current NMC registration.
• Experience working in an acute paediatric setting.
• Excellent communication and organisational skills.
• Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to work under pressure and prioritise workload in a rapidly changing environment.
• Professional and compassionate approach to patient care.
• Commitment to continued professional development and NMC revalidation requirements.
• Knowledge of current NHS issues and nursing practice.
• Understanding of health and safety principles within a clinical environment.
  
  

Desirable

• Experience working within an acute Paediatric Emergency Department.
• Ability to triage patients.
• Experience applying plaster casts, wound assessment and wound dressing techniques.
• Knowledge of nursing strategy implementation.
• Experience contributing to clinical audit and quality improvement activities.
