Staff Software Engineer, Product

About the Role

Join an early-stage AI-powered govtech software company as a hands-on Staff Software Engineer, Product. You will set technical direction across a product domain and build tools that help public-sector teams manage hiring and workforce operations.

What You'll Do

• Own product features end to end, from data modeling and APIs through frontend implementation and rollout.

• Build AI-powered experiences, including chat interfaces, LLM tool-calling, and clear presentations of AI-generated insights.

• Lead a product pod of 2 to 4 engineers, providing direction and mentorship while remaining primarily hands-on.

• Develop search, filtering, and data normalization experiences that make complex workforce data easier to use and trust.

• Improve engineering quality through code reviews, architectural decisions, and practical standards.

What We're Looking For

• Typically 7 to 10 years of experience building and shipping software products, with sustained staff-level ownership of a product area.

• Strong full-stack experience with TypeScript, Node.js, React, Tailwind CSS, Postgres data modeling, and API design.

• Experience building production AI or LLM-powered features, such as agents, RAG, tool-calling, or streaming, and working with startup teams through periods of growth.

• Experience as a player-coach who mentors engineers, communicates directly and constructively, and can raise questions or push back when appropriate.

• Relevant academic or professional background, and experience writing software before AI coding tools became widely available.

• Familiarity with TanStack, Next.js, Drizzle, Vercel AI SDK, VoltAgent, or Mastra, and with background jobs or durable workflows such as Trigger.dev or Temporal.

• Open-source contributions to, or maintenance of, a widely used tool are a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

Annual salary range: $202,000 to $262,000 USD. Visa sponsorship is available.

Location

Hybrid, with San Francisco as the primary location. New York City is also listed as a location. San Francisco candidates may start remotely before transitioning to an office, while New York City candidates are expected to work onsite four days per week.
