Staff Software Engineer, Product

About the Role

Join the product engineering team at an early-stage government-focused HR technology company. You will set technical direction and build full-stack product features, including AI-powered experiences, that help local governments manage their workforce.

What You'll Do

• Own product features end to end, from data models and APIs through frontend development and rollout.

• Build AI-powered user experiences using chat interfaces, LLM tool-calling, and clear presentation of AI-generated insights.

• Lead a product pod of 2 to 4 engineers, mentoring teammates while remaining primarily hands-on.

• Build search, filtering, and data normalization experiences that make imperfect workforce data useful and trustworthy.

• Guide architecture, code reviews, and pragmatic engineering standards across the team.

What We're Looking For

• 7 to 10 years of experience building and shipping software products, with sustained staff-level ownership of a product domain.

• Strong full-stack skills with TypeScript, Node.js, React, Tailwind CSS, API design, and Postgres data modeling.

• Experience building production AI or LLM-powered features, such as agents, retrieval-augmented generation, tool-calling, or streaming.

• Experience mentoring engineers as a player-coach and working at startups through periods of growth.

• Background relevant to HR, government workforce management, or related product domains.

• Familiarity with Next.js, TanStack, Drizzle, Vercel AI SDK, workflow or job-processing tools, and modern observability or infrastructure tools is valuable.

• Clear, kind, proactive communication and comfort asking questions and constructively challenging technical decisions.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range: $202,000 to $262,000 annually. Visa sponsorship is available.
