Staff Software Engineer, Product

About the Role

Join the product engineering team at an AI-enabled public-sector HR technology company. In this hands-on staff-level role, you will guide technical direction and build product features that help government organizations manage their workforce.

What You'll Do

• Own product features end to end, from data models and APIs through frontend implementation and rollout.

• Build AI-powered experiences, including chat interfaces, LLM tool-calling, and clear presentations of AI-generated insights.

• Lead a product pod of 2 to 4 engineers, mentoring teammates while remaining primarily hands-on.

• Create search, filtering, and data normalization experiences that make imperfect workforce data useful and trustworthy.

• Set architectural direction, review code, and establish pragmatic engineering standards.

What We're Looking For

• 7 to 10 years of experience building and shipping software products, with sustained staff-level ownership of a product area.

• Full-stack experience with a frontend focus, including React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Node.js, Postgres, and API design.

• Experience building production AI or LLM-powered features, such as agents, retrieval-augmented generation, tool-calling, or streaming.

• Experience mentoring engineers as a hands-on player-coach and working at startups through periods of growth.

• Relevant academic or professional background, strong communication and collaboration skills, and comfort offering constructive pushback.

• Familiarity with TanStack, Next.js, Drizzle, AI development frameworks, and background jobs or durable workflow tools is valuable.

Compensation & Benefits

Annual salary range: $202,000 to $262,000 USD. Visa sponsorship is available.
