About the Opportunity
Are you looking for a challenging and rewarding internship where you can work alongside and learn from some of the industry's most talented engineers and architects? If so, Walker Consultants' Ann Arbor office is the place for you.
As a Structural Engineering Intern, you will gain hands-on experience supporting structural design, restoration, and rehabilitation projects for a variety of building types and structures. Working closely with architects, engineers, project managers, and technical specialists, you will contribute to project development from initial planning and design through construction administration and field observation.
This internship offers exposure to structural analysis, BIM modeling, construction documentation, site investigations, and fieldwork. You will have the opportunity to develop practical engineering skills while collaborating on projects that help improve the safety, performance, and longevity of the built environment.
What You'll Do
- Work directly with Project Engineers and Project Managers to develop project designs, calculations, and construction documents.

Prepare and revise drawings and documentation throughout various phases of design, including plans, elevations, sections, and details.

Utilize BIM technology (Revit) to develop and coordinate 3D building models.

Perform structural design calculations and detailing for building structures, foundations, and retaining systems.

Interpret and apply building codes, industry standards, and project requirements.

Assist with project coordination, internal team meetings, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Review construction phase documentation, shop drawings, and project submittals.

Participate in field investigations, site visits, and construction observations to document existing conditions and construction progress.

Support the preparation of engineering reports, calculations, and technical documentation.

Perform other duties as assigned.
What You Bring
Required Qualifications- Actively pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Engineering or Architectural/Engineering Technology.
- 0-5 years of previous structural design experience.
- Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills with a range of individuals, including clients, consultants, architects, and engineers.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Reliable access to a personal vehicle is required for the duration of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge and experience using Revit.
- Understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Project, and AutoCAD.
- Coursework or experience related to structural analysis, concrete design, steel design, or foundation systems.
- Interest in structural rehabilitation, restoration, and building performance projects.
- Willingness to participate in field visits and construction observations.
