Role Overview

Our Client is seeking an experienced MLRO to lead its anti-money laundering and counter-funding of terrorism framework. The successful candidate will hold the formal MLRO appointment, oversee the Business’s regulatory obligations and serve as its principal AML/CFT liaison with the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit and Malta Gaming Authority.

Key Responsibilities

• Regulatory Appointment: Fulfil the statutory responsibilities assigned to the MLRO under the Prevention of Money Laundering and Funding of Terrorism Regulations and the FIAU Implementing Procedures.
• AML/CFT Governance: Develop, introduce and periodically reassess the Company’s financial crime prevention framework, ensuring that internal standards continue to reflect legislative and supervisory expectations.
• Risk Frameworks: Manage the preparation and ongoing refinement of the Business Risk Assessment and Customer Risk Assessment methodologies.
• Control Enhancement: Evaluate findings arising from compliance reviews, audits and risk exercises, establish suitable safeguards and monitor corrective measures through to timely completion.
• Regulatory Submissions: Coordinate the production and filing of the Risk Evaluation Questionnaire and any additional AML/CFT returns requested by the relevant authorities.
• Management Reporting: Deliver clear updates on financial crime exposure, control performance and regulatory developments during senior leadership and Board meetings.
• Internal Disclosures: Examine reports concerning potentially suspicious conduct, document the assessment undertaken and decide whether further escalation is warranted.
• External Reporting: Prepare and submit disclosures to the FIAU whenever the circumstances meet the applicable reporting threshold, observing all prescribed deadlines.
• Regulatory Liaison: Represent the Company in AML/CFT communications with the FIAU, MGA and other competent bodies, responding to enquiries accurately and promptly.
• Audit and Inspection Support: Coordinate the AML/CFT elements of assurance reviews, external audits and supervisory examinations, including evidence gathering and follow-up activity.
• Operational Alignment: Partner with departments across the Business to embed regulatory safeguards within systems, workflows and day-to-day operating practices.
• Advisory Support: Provide practical guidance to internal stakeholders and recommend improvements that reinforce the effectiveness of the Company’s financial crime controls.
• Documentation Management: Maintain complete, reliable and retrievable AML/CFT records in line with legal obligations and internal retention standards.
• Additional Responsibilities: Carry out other reasonable assignments connected with the position and the evolving requirements of the Business.

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes

• Education: A relevant academic qualification or recognised professional certification in anti-money laundering, compliance, law, risk, finance or a comparable discipline is required.
• Experience: Previous service as an MLRO, Deputy MLRO or senior professional within AML or regulatory compliance is essential. Exposure to risk governance, supervisory returns and AML/CFT assessment work would be advantageous.
• Sector Knowledge: A sound understanding of the iGaming industry and the financial crime vulnerabilities associated with online gaming operations is required. Experience involving regulated jurisdictions would be beneficial.
• Regulatory Knowledge: Strong familiarity with the FIAU Implementing Procedures, the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the Prevention of Money Laundering and Funding of Terrorism Regulations and relevant European anti-money laundering directives is essential.
• Language Skills: Excellent command of written and spoken English is required to succeed in this role. The ability to communicate in Maltese would be an asset.
• Communication Skills: The ability to explain complex regulatory matters clearly and engage confidently with directors, colleagues, auditors and public authorities is required.
• Interpersonal Skills: A collaborative approach, strong professional credibility and the ability to build constructive relationships across different business functions are important.
• Technical Skills: Applicants should demonstrate competence in AML/CFT governance, risk-based controls, suspicious activity evaluation, regulatory submissions and compliance documentation.
• Business Awareness: Commercial understanding and the ability to balance regulatory responsibilities with operational realities are essential.
• Organisation: Excellent planning, prioritisation and record-management abilities are required, together with close attention to detail.
• Self-Motivated: The successful candidate will take initiative, work effectively with limited supervision and maintain a positive, committed approach.
• Professional Integrity: High ethical standards, discretion and independence of judgement are fundamental to this appointment.
• Problem-Solving: The role requires calm, evidence-based decision-making and the ability to reach defensible conclusions when working under pressure.
