Job Description

This is a remote position.

Tutor Doctor El Paso is looking for experienced, reliable, and highly knowledgeable SAT and ACT Test Prep Tutors who can help students improve not only their academic skills, but also the strategies, pacing, confidence, and decision-making needed to perform at their best on test day.

This is more than subject tutoring. We are looking for tutors who understand the SAT or ACT as a test and know how to teach proven test-taking strategies while identifying and strengthening each student's individual areas of need.

Tutors may specialize in SAT or ACT and do not need to tutor both. However, tutors should be prepared to teach all sections of the exam they choose to tutor.

Your Role

As a Test Prep Tutor, you will work one-on-one with students using Tutor Doctor's structured test-prep program, assessments, practice tests, and resources.

You will be expected to:

  • Teach and reinforce proven SAT or ACT test-taking strategies
  • Tutor students across all sections of your selected exam
  • Analyze student performance to identify strengths, weaknesses, and learning gaps
  • Use practice-test results to determine where tutoring time will have the greatest impact
  • Teach valuable academic content while also helping students understand how to approach the test strategically
  • Establish clear expectations and goals for each student
  • Teach pacing, time management, question prioritization, elimination strategies, and effective test-day decision-making
  • Help students understand when to use a strategy versus when additional content knowledge is needed
  • Adapt instruction to the student's learning style, current skill level, and target score
  • Hold students accountable for practice, preparation, and participation between sessions
  • Communicate regularly with Tutor Doctor staff about student progress, concerns, and recommendations
  • Complete a brief session report after each tutoring session

SAT Tutors: DESMOS Expertise Is Essential

For SAT tutoring, we are specifically looking for tutors who are highly proficient with the DESMOS calculator and understand how to use it strategically on the Digital SAT.

Tutors should be comfortable teaching students how to recognize when DESMOS can help them solve a problem more accurately and efficiently, while also knowing when another mathematical approach is more appropriate.

Our goal is not simply to teach students how to use a calculator—it is to teach them how to make smart decisions that maximize their time and performance on the SAT.

Requirements

What We're Looking For

Our ideal Test Prep Tutor:

  • Has previous SAT and/or ACT tutoring or test-prep experience
  • Has experience teaching proven SAT/ACT-specific test-taking strategies
  • Understands the format, question types, pacing, and expectations of the exam they tutor
  • Can confidently teach all sections of their selected exam
  • Is proficient in high school-level math, including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus
  • Is proficient in reading comprehension, analysis, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and writing conventions
  • For SAT: is highly proficient with DESMOS and its application to Digital SAT Math
  • For ACT: is comfortable teaching the skills and strategies required for the ACT sections
  • Can analyze student results and turn them into a clear, individualized tutoring plan
  • Sets clear expectations and holds students accountable
  • Can explain difficult concepts in multiple ways
  • Is encouraging and positive while maintaining structure and focus
  • Has excellent planning, communication, and time-management skills
  • Is comfortable following an established program while personalizing instruction for each student

Strategy + Content + Individualization

Every student comes into test prep with a different starting point.

One student may understand the academic content but struggle with timing and strategy. Another may be an excellent reader but need significant support in math. Another may know how to solve a problem but spend too much time getting to the answer.

A strong Test Prep Tutor recognizes these differences.

We expect our tutors to use student data, practice tests, observations, and ongoing performance to determine:

What does this student need to learn? What strategies will help them most? And how can we use their tutoring time as effectively as possible?

The goal is to maximize each student's strengths while strategically addressing their weaknesses.

Commitment & Reliability

Reliability and consistency are essential for this position.

Students enroll in a complete test-prep program with a specific timeline leading up to their SAT or ACT test date. Tutors must be prepared to:

  • Maintain a consistent tutoring schedule
  • Follow the established test-prep timeline
  • Prepare for each session
  • Set expectations for student practice and participation
  • Track progress throughout the program
  • Complete the student's enrolled program whenever possible

Benefits

Why Tutor With Tutor Doctor?

  • Flexible scheduling
  • One-on-one students
  • Structured test-prep curriculum
  • Practice tests and performance analytics
  • Test-prep resources and materials
  • Support from our Tutor Doctor team
