The 3rd Officer is responsible for executing a safe navigational watch at sea, in port, and at anchor. As Junior Officer of the Watch (JOOW), they assist the Senior Officer of the Watch (SOOW) in all bridge duties, monitoring vessel safety, weather, external communications, and navigational regulations such as COLREG. The 3rd Officer supports voyage planning tasks, updates nautical publications, maintains bridge logbooks, and manages the ship’s master clock and chlorine chart recorder. They also contribute to the safe operation of the ship by reporting equipment failures, supporting emergency communications, and participating in shipboard operations such as mooring and tender driving, if assigned. Additionally, the 3rd Officer plays an active role in enforcing safety protocols and promoting a strong safety culture onboard. They assist the Vice Captain and Safety Officer with drills, inspections, and crew training. The role includes responsibility for crew documentation and administrative tasks related to departure and arrival reports. The 3rd Officer also supervises cadet and junior officers, ensuring their professional development through guidance and example, while supporting the implementation of Bridge Resource Management (BRM) and HESS safety procedures. DESIRED SKILL AND CAPABILITIES: People Management: · Guide and supervise junior and cadet officers, ensuring their duties are performed effectively on and off watch. Assist in managing mooring stations and supporting tender operations as ordered by the ship’s command. Guest Experience Excellence: · Support navigational duties and emergency communications to maintain safe and smooth ship operations that contribute to a positive guest experience. Operational Oversight: · Assist in the maintenance of bridge equipment, logs, voyage records, and stability management as per company procedures. Ensure equipment, documentation, and communication processes are in full operational order for navigational readiness. Strategic Planning and Innovation: · Assist with voyage planning, route analysis, and updates of navigational systems such as ECDIS and weather software. Contribute to documentation and briefing materials for the Captain’s voyage overview. Yacht Integration: Supports coordination between departments through timely reporting, collaborative work practices, and alignment with Four Seasons' operational standards. Education: - Completed studies in nautical sciences. - Preferably a Diploma or Master’s degree - Valid COC OOW - STCW II / 1 Experience: - Minimum 12 months of sea service as a deck cadet Travel: Willing and able to work onboard for extended periods on international itineraries Position Outline: Key Activities Outcomes Watchkeeping and Navigation · Conduct a safe navigational watch (0-4 / 12-16, 4-8 / 16-20, or 8-12 / 20-24) at sea, in port, or at anchor. · Monitor COLREG compliance, ETA/ETD checks, and external communications as required. · Participate in watch changeover briefings and support monitoring of vessel movements and conditions. · Conduct post-watch safety rounds and line checks, especially in port. Support to Senior Officers · Assist the Vice Captain, Safety Officer, and Senior Officers in safety drills, injury logbook entries, and crew training. · Support voyage planning officers in preparing nautical documentation, updating ECDIS, and briefing materials. · Help with logbooks, bridge equipment maintenance, and stability-related documentation. · Facilitate documentation for crew embarkation/disembarkation, logbooks, and consular papers. Bridge Equipment and Documentation · Maintain bridge logbooks, master clock, chlorine chart recorders, and voyage files. · Support operation and maintenance of GMDSS and report malfunctions to the Captain or Vice Captain. · Ensure availability, signing, and stamping of all bridge documentation. · Monitor and support cleanliness and stock control of bridge spaces and safety centers. Safety and Emergency Preparedness · Participate in crew training, safety drills, and emergency exercises. · Support ship stability checks, mooring station duties, and communication in emergencies. · Enforce safety procedures and contribute to maintaining an effective HESS management system. · Be a dynamic contributor to a safe working culture onboard. Voyage Planning Support · Assist in applying voyage planning procedures and preparing the voyage plan and overview. · Help update ECDIS, weather systems, routing, and supporting documentation for the Captain’s briefing. · Support maintenance of bridge logs and documentation for voyage briefings. · Assist in maintaining bridge service logs and equipment tracking systems. Training and Development · Take charge of educating and supervising junior and cadet officers. · Support proper execution of duties under BRM principles as assigned by the Master. · Participate in onboard training and assigned side duties with responsibility and accuracy. · Encourage high performance in safety, communication, and professional standards.
