Accountant 3 Requisition ID req37954 Working Title Accountant 3 Position Grade 13 Position Summary The Accountant 3 serves as the lead accountant for the Division of Adolescent Medicine and the Division of Prevention and Population Sciences under the Department of Pediatrics and is responsible for advanced accounting functions, fiscal oversight, and compliance with University, sponsor, state, and federal requirements. The position oversees the daily processing and review of revenue and expenditures, prepares complex financial statements, projections, forecasts, and management reports, and provides financial guidance to division leadership, principal investigators, and funding agencies. The Accountant 3 analyzes financial trends, develops recommendations to improve resource utilization and internal controls, and ensures the integrity of financial data. In addition to performing advanced accounting duties, this position monitors compliance with university policies, generally accepted accounting principles, and sponsor requirements. The Accountant 3 serves as a key resource to division leadership by interpreting financial information, supporting strategic planning, resolving complex accounting issues, and maintaining effective relationships with faculty, principal investigators, and administrative staff. Depending on divisional needs, the position may supervise personnel involved in grant preparation and submission, coordinate work assignments, train staff, and participate in developing or improving financial policies and procedures. Knowledge and ability to facilitate adherence to UNM policies and procedures is critical. Excellent communication and collaboration skills and a team-oriented attitude are required to partner with the Pediatrics Accounting Team, Division Chiefs, Administration, and other department/UNM faculty and staff regarding finance policies and procedures or funding requirements. The ideal candidate is a motivated, self-starter with a strong accounting background in both unrestricted and sponsored projects accounting (i.e., Grants and Contracts). Conditions of Employment Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Preferred Qualifications Three or more years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience. Demonstrated experience preparing complex budgets, financial forecasts, variance analyses, and management reports. Experience with Banner Finance, MyReports, or comparable enterprise financial systems. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, lookup functions, and financial analysis tools. Knowledge of fund accounting, generally accepted accounting principles, and sponsored projects/grants and contracts administration. Experience preparing journal entries, reconciliations, labor redistributions, and financial reporting. Demonstrated ability to interpret financial information and communicate recommendations to non-financial stakeholders. Experience developing or improving accounting processes, internal controls, or reporting tools. Previous supervisory or lead experience in an accounting environment is preferred.
