The Sr. Accountant maintains financial records and ensures that financial transactions are properly recorded. This position safeguards the accuracy of entries to ledger accounts and reconciles subsidiary ledger accounts to the general ledger.


CORE JOB FUNCTIONS


Prepares complex balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other financial reports. Analyzes current costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses. Oversees, mentors, and assists lower-level accountants. Avoids legal challenges by complying with legal requirements. Protects organization's value by keeping information confidential. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations. Prepares and records asset, liability, revenue, and expenses entries by compiling and analyzing account information. Creates financial reports for taxes, regulatory agencies, and stockholders. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting procedures and principles.
  • Knowledge of budget control methods, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to prepare financial and accounting records.
  • Ability to analyze, consolidate, and interpret accounting data.
  • Ability to compile, organize, interpret, and communicate accounting data and results concisely.
  • Ability to manage a budget and work within the constraints of that budget.

Department Specific Functions

This position will be responsible for various areas relating to financial reporting, including working with the overall financial reporting group to ensure that the financial statements are prepared timely and in accordance with U.S. GAAP. This role will also participate in monthly reporting, quarterly reviews, year-end audits, and advising the Director on complex transactions from an accounting perspective. This requires significant interaction with individuals internal and external to the organization, including senior management, independent auditors and other service providers. This position requires the ability to research accounting literature, and interpret transactions in a clear and concise manner for multiple audiences. The Sr. Accountant will display effective planning and organizational skills; be results oriented; and possess the ability to competently manage multiple priorities.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for areas in the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end financial closing process and reporting
  • Reviews transactions and ensures timely deadlines of month-end entries
  • Assist Accounting Manager with preparation of year-end related audit work papers, audit schedules, and financial statements
  • Research and analyze complex accounting transactions, including those related to entity consolidations, complex debt instruments, and other financial statement line items. This includes knowledge of researching/applying U.S. GAAP and understanding interdependencies.
  • Present recommendations/conclusions on various transactions across the organization
  • Interact directly with key members of the external audit team.
  • Assist Accounting Manager with developing procedures related to Financial Reporting processes. Recommends changes as needed.
  • Perform technical and regulatory accounting research, and develop alternative approaches as deemed appropriate.
  • Analysis and assistance in implementation of new higher-education related professional accounting pronouncements
  • Perform other duties as assigned



Department Specific Qualifications


Education:

  • Bachelor's degree with major in accounting. CPA preferred or comparable/ equivalent experience.



Experience:

  • Five to seven years of progressively experience preferred, including at least 1 year experience in Financial Reporting.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office including Excel and Word
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion
  • Commitment to excellent customer service and positive teamwork
  • Ability to handle stress and work well under pressure
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP
