Job Summary
Cambridge is modernizing how finance works, and Accounts Payable is where that change is most visible: Workday Financials, a supplier portal, and automated close and reconciliation tools. As an Accountant III, you will own supplier-to-payment accounting across multiple entities. You will go beyond processing transactions. You will apply sound judgment to exceptions, use data to catch problems before they reach the general ledger, and help improve how work flows through Workday.
This is a senior individual-contributor role for someone who thinks critically, works comfortably with data, and wants to shape a more automated finance function.
Key Deliverables and Responsibilities
Supplier invoice and payment accounting
- Process, review and approve supplier invoices and supplier invoice requests in Workday, matching to purchase orders and contracts where applicable.
- Resolve invoice exceptions, holds and coding errors. Decide when to correct, escalate or push back to the requester.
- Prepare and review supplier payments, confirming the right entity, bank account, timing and approvals.
- Partner with Procurement on supplier onboarding and supplier portal adoption, and verify changes to supplier banking information before they take effect.
- Respond to supplier and internal inquiries with clear, accurate answers.
Accounting, reconciliation and close
- Prepare and post journal entries. Record accruals for goods and services received but not yet invoiced.
- Prepare and review monthly balance sheet reconciliations for accounts payable, accrued liabilities and related accounts. Investigate and resolve reconciling items.
- Reconcile bank and corporate card activity across multiple entities, including intercompany balances.
- Complete close tasks on time, with documented evidence of review.
- Support internal and external audits with schedules, documentation and a clear explanation of the “why” behind balances and entries.
Data, controls and improvement
- Build and use Workday reports and dashboards to monitor aging, duplicate payments, exceptions and spend trends, and act on what the data shows.
- Find the root cause of recurring issues (data, configuration, training or process) and recommend fixes to management.
- Support compliance with GAAP, applicable rules and regulations, and internal controls, including segregation of duties.
- Serve as process owner for accounts payable in Workday: understand how it is configured, support users, test changes and releases, and bring improvement requests to the Workday administrators.
- Write and maintain current procedure documentation. Help identify and implement automation and efficiency opportunities.
- Protect sensitive and confidential financial information.
- Cross-train on department responsibilities and contribute to special projects.
What We Are Looking For
What You'll Bring
- Two or more years of accounts payable experience.
- Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and internal controls.
- Critical thinking and sound judgment: you look for the cause behind an exception and know when to resolve it, escalate it or ask for help.
- Data literacy: comfort analyzing data in Excel or similar tools and using reports to find issues, with the ability to explain what the numbers mean.
- Ability to learn, navigate and improve the finance systems we use as they change, and to own your processes through to a lasting fix.
- Clear written and verbal communication with finance and non-finance colleagues.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with Workday Financials, especially supplier invoices, procure-to-pay and reporting.
- Experience with a close or reconciliation platform, such as Trintech Cadency.
- Experience building or using reports and dashboards to analyze financial data.
- Experience in a broker-dealer, investment adviser or other financial services environment.
- Experience improving or automating accounting processes.
