Accounting Manager

Our client's Bookkeeping Division supports a growing roster of clients who need part-time, high-quality accounting support. Each bookkeeper manages multiple client accounts simultaneously, and the division is led by a Division Manager who oversees operations and quality. We're hiring an Accounting Manager to grow alongside the Division Manager and help take the team to the next level. This is a player-coach role — meaning you are not managing from a distance. You carry your own client workload, stay sharp on the technical side, and step in to support team members when they're stuck, struggling, or need guidance on a tricky accounting situation. The right person for this role is an experienced bookkeeper or accountant ready to take on leadership responsibility without stepping away from the work they love. You lead by example, mentor by doing, and help build a team culture where accuracy, accountability, and client satisfaction are the standard. Responsibilities Team Leadership & Support — Player-Coach This is the defining characteristic of the role. You are in the trenches with your team, not above them. Work alongside the Division Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the bookkeeping team Serve as a go-to resource for team members who encounter complex accounting situations, client-specific challenges, or workflow questions Provide hands-on guidance and mentorship to bookkeepers who are struggling — stepping in to help problem-solve, not just redirect Conduct regular check-ins with team members to monitor workload, quality, and morale Identify skill gaps across the team and support development through coaching, training, and knowledge sharing Help onboard new team members and ensure they are set up for success from day one Client Bookkeeping — Own Your Portfolio You still do the work. This is not a purely managerial role. Manage a portfolio of assigned client accounts across multiple industries, delivering accurate and timely bookkeeping services Perform core bookkeeping functions including transaction categorization, bank reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, and month-end close Prepare and deliver monthly financial reports and statements to assigned clients Maintain clean, organized, and audit-ready client files and records Communicate directly with clients to address questions, gather documentation, and provide financial updates Quality Review & Oversight Review team members' work for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with client expectations and accounting standards Catch and correct errors before they reach the client — your review is the last line of quality control Establish and reinforce consistent standards for how work is documented, formatted, and delivered across the team Flag recurring quality issues to the Division Manager and help develop solutions Operations & Workflow Support the Division Manager in managing client assignments, team capacity, and workflow across the bookkeeping division Help ensure all client deadlines are met and that no accounts fall behind due to bandwidth or complexity Contribute to internal processes, templates, and documentation that help the team work more efficiently Identify tools and workflow improvements and bring recommendations to leadership Requirements 3+ years of hands-on bookkeeping or accounting experience, with strong command of core bookkeeping functions Prior experience managing, mentoring, or leading a small accounting or bookkeeping team Proven ability to manage multiple client accounts simultaneously with accuracy and consistency Proficiency in QuickBooks Online, Xero, or other commonly used accounting platforms — multi-software experience is a strong plus Strong working knowledge of GAAP and standard bookkeeping practices Excellent communication skills — you can explain accounting concepts clearly to both team members and non-finance clients High attention to detail and a genuine commitment to delivering clean, accurate work Self-directed and reliable — you manage your own time and your team's without needing to be micromanaged Nice to Have Experience in a virtual bookkeeping, remote accounting, or multi-client accounting environment Background working with small to mid-sized businesses across a variety of industries Experience onboarding new clients or new team members into an accounting workflow Familiarity with project management or team coordination tools such as Asana, ClickUp, or similar Accounting certification or degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field Active CPA license or CPA candidacy What Makes You a Great Fit You are equally comfortable in a spreadsheet and in a coaching conversation — you don't see those as separate skills When a team member is stuck, your first instinct is to help them through it, not hand it off or brush past it You hold yourself and your team to a high standard — client work that goes out the door reflects on all of you You're organized enough to manage your own portfolio while keeping an eye on the health of the team around you You thrive in a remote environment where you're trusted to own your responsibilities and communicate proactively What We Offer Long-term, stable engagement with a growing US-facing accounting team Real autonomy over your client portfolio — not micromanagement Mentorship of junior bookkeepers, with leadership runway as the team grows 100% remote with structured async documentation and weekly check-ins Direct exposure to US-based clients and US accounting practice Up to $10/hr USD Data Privacy By applying, you consent to being contacted via the contact information provided in your application for recruitment purposes only.
