Transforming The Way Construction Owners Use Technology & Data

As Accounting Manager, you’ll be responsible for the accuracy of Avicado’s financial records and the depth of insight behind them. You’ll own the month-end close, the budget, and the project accounting picture. You’ll keep cash flowing through AP, AR, and payroll, and keep us audit-ready for government-funded work. Reporting directly to the Controller, you’ll keep day-to-day accounting steady so the Controller can lead process and system change, and you’ll support that work hands-on.

You will love this job if…

  • You get real satisfaction from books that balance and a close that lands on time, every cycle.
  • You want to know how the numbers really work: what’s driving project margin, where each cost belongs, and why.
  • You enjoy owning a budget end to end and explaining variances plainly to department leaders.
  • You like being the hands-on partner behind process and system change, not just watching it happen.
  • You use AI tools like Claude regularly in your work and know when to verify the output.

Core Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Controller Support & Process Change: Support the Controller on special projects, process changes, and system changes with hands-on work.
    • Serve as the Controller’s go-to for one-off projects, analyses, and requests that come up outside the normal cycle.
    • Document how Avicado’s accounting works, including the chart of accounts, project and cost structures, and the reasoning behind key decisions, and keep it current as processes change.
    • Spot gaps and risks early and bring options, not just problems.
  • Project Accounting & Cost Principles: Own how costs and revenue are tracked, charged, and reported across projects.
    • Allocate revenue, labor, and direct and indirect costs to the right projects each month, with the methods documented and applied consistently.
    • Own project margin: review it monthly, explain what is driving it, and flag projects that drift from expectations.
  • Budgeting: Own the budget process, with the Controller as the final reviewer.
    • Prepare and maintain the budget with clear drivers and assumptions, and track and explain variances to department leaders.
  • FAR Compliance & Audit Support: Lead preparation for and response to government audits, with the Controller as the final reviewer.
    • Prepare audit-ready support for costs charged to government-funded work, including labor charging and timekeeping.
    • Respond to auditor requests and maintain indirect rate calculations and related submissions.
  • Month-End Close: Maintain and streamline close procedures, reviewing account reconciliations and ensuring accuracy.
    • Maintain the close calendar, lead the close to its deadlines, and review reconciliations.
    • Keep improving close procedures, using AI tools such as Claude where they save time without weakening controls.
  • Accounts Payable & Receivable: Oversee invoicing, collections, and payments while refining processes to optimize cash flow.
    • Oversee reconciliations, AR and AP reporting, vendor payments, and collections, and administer the company credit card program.
  • Payroll Execution & Compliance: Run payroll each cycle, accurately and on time, and keep federal and state filings compliant.
  • Financial Reporting & Compliance: Prepare and review financial statements and budgets, ensuring adherence to accounting standards, regulations, and company policies.

What You Should Have:

Experience and knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. A CPA is a nice plus, but it is not required.
  • A strong track record building and managing budgets.
  • Solid project accounting background, including tracking cost and margin at the project level.
  • Working knowledge of FAR cost principles, and experience with government audits or incurred cost work.
  • Experience running day-to-day accounting operations.
  • Experience supporting a system implementation or process change from the finance side.

Tools and skills

  • Proficiency with accounting and payroll software (Xero and Rippling preferred).
  • Advanced Excel skills, including PowerQuery.
  • AI skills: practical, regular use of AI tools such as Claude for analysis, reconciliation, documentation, and reporting, with good judgment on when to verify the output.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, presentation, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to explain complex numbers plainly.
