MedZed Accounting Manager Job Description

Position Title: Accounting Manager

Department: Finance

Reports To: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Location: Remote (US, Central or Eastern time zone), approximately 5% travel

Employment Type: Full-time

Position Overview

MedZed is a fast-growing provider of tech-enabled care coordination services for acute Medicaid member populations. Our services deliver better outcomes, healthier members, and cost savings for some of the most vulnerable, high-cost populations in the country, advancing the triple aim of healthcare. Hundreds of Navigators serve our members in the field, supported by G&A colleagues across HR, Technology, Operations, and Sales & Marketing. As Accounting Manager, you will own the accuracy of our books and build the accounting organization behind them. You will review and finalize month-end and year-end close, lead audits and compliance reviews, and manage tax compliance with our outside advisors.

You will report to the CFO and partner with the Director of Finance on forecast assumptions and explanations of historical variances. We run lean, so you will get real scope and exposure beyond accounting. We are looking for someone eager to get things done in collaboration with the colleagues who support our Navigators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and finalize month-end and year-end close, completing select close tasks and making final adjustments, so financial statements are timely, accurate, and GAAP-compliant.
  • Own the general ledger and oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and financial reporting.
  • Own technical accounting judgments, including revenue recognition, capitalized software, and equity-based incentive units, and document them so they hold up in audit.
  • Manage consolidation and intercompany activity across multiple legal entities and states.
  • Lead external financial audits and compliance reviews from preparation through completion.
  • Prepare bank financial and covenant reporting, including covenant compliance calculations.
  • Manage tax compliance and filings, working with outside tax advisors.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls that safeguard company assets and support regulatory compliance.
  • Partner with the Director of Finance on forecast assumptions and explanations of historical variances.
  • Prepare and analyze financial reports and give the Executive Team clear insights and recommendations.
  • Build and develop the accounting team, including a newer Senior Accountant, and grow it as the business needs.
  • Lead adoption and implementation of accounting technology and automation across our finance stack (Sage Intacct, Ramp, and ADP), from selection through rollout and training.
  • Partner with stakeholders across the company to improve processes and lead the change management that makes them stick.
  • Work with external partners, including auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions.

What Success Looks Like

In your first year, you will have:

  • Brought month-end close to 5 business days, with reviewed, reliable financials.
  • Moved your Senior Accountant to owning the vast majority of the close, with a clear plan for how the team scales.
  • Led audits and compliance reviews end to end, with no surprises for the CFO.
  • Put controls and documentation in place that hold up as the business grows.
  • Become the person finance and business leaders trust to explain the numbers and begin to influence operational and business decisions through a deep understanding of the key levers.

Who You Are

  • A leader who thrives in lean teams and builds the people and processes to scale as the business grows.
  • An owner who can partner with others to accomplish a common goal, including rolling up their sleeves when the work calls for it.
  • Detail-oriented and responsive.
  • Relentless about improving how we work and building a top-tier accounting organization.
  • Proactive, with an instinct for determining when and how to move forward without explicit instructions.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • 7 to 10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years as a manager or reviewer.
  • Deep technical accounting expertise, including revenue recognition for contracts with variable or performance-based consideration (ASC 606), capitalized internal-use software (ASC 350-40), equity-based incentive units (ASC 718), and multi-entity consolidation (ASC 810).
  • Experience leading a lean team while staying hands-on.
  • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with a mid-market accounting system.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to present financial results to executive leadership.

Strongly Preferred

  • Hands-on Sage Intacct experience. Familiarity with Ramp or ADP is a plus.
  • Experience in a growth-stage company with a lean finance team.
  • Experience in business services or tech-enabled services.
  • Healthcare experience, particularly Medicaid. Revenue cycle management experience is a plus.

Preferred

  • CPA.

Work Environment and Benefits

  • Remote role with approximately 5% travel.
  • Comprehensive healthcare benefits package and 401(k).
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • A role whose scope grows as MedZed does.
