Job Description
Bose Labs is seeking a creative, curious and hands-on Acoustic Engineer to help establish and enhance physical reference designs for a variety of wearable applications including audio, noise cancellation and voice related experiences.
In this role, your work will regularly span across multiple projects with a variety of both near-term and long-term goals. Projects will often require contributions to be made within the acoustics discipline as well as tangential disciplines such as making laboratory measurements, building small prototypes, and designing simple fixtures or mechanical components.
This position sits at the intersection space of research and product development. You will use your creativity and innovation skills to translate foundational technologies and technical instances into practical, scalable engineering solutions that can be used as the basis for licensable technologies that support a wide range of wearable products as well as Bose-branded products development.
The successful candidate will be comfortable working within a small cross-functional team on several simultaneous, parallel projects with the ability to use analytical, empirical and hands-on methods to quickly work through ambiguous problem spaces.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to development and documentation of existing and new, novel mechanical/acoustical reference designs for wearable devices
- Use simulation tools to predict acoustical system behavior
- Design and execute acoustical experiments to verify / supplement simulation results
- Use hands-on capabilities to build and test mock-up prototypes to gain fundamental and directional insights
- Conduct acoustical measurements of transducer components, subsystems and full concept assemblies with associated data analysis and synthesis of conclusions
- Collaborate with engineers from mechanical, DSP, electrical and software domains to understand system-level requirements and dependencies
- Anticipate and identify important system level tradeoffs, risks, guardrails and dependencies for product development teams to consider in future product decisions
- Present concepts, experimental results, recommendations and technical risks through peer reviews, design reviews, written documentation, and stakeholder demonstrations
- Ensure collaboration across research, product development and business unit organizations to ensure alignment for deliverables
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Acoustical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- 3+ years of relevant professional experience in acoustical engineering including measurements and analysis
- Experience in design or measurements of acoustical transducers including micro-drivers, MEMs microphones and MEMs vibration sensors
- Hands-on experience designing, building and measuring physical prototypes and associated fixtures
- Proficiency with MATLAB or an equivalent environment for measurement and data analysis
- Experience using lumped parameter and FEA acoustical simulation tools such as COMSOL, PSPICE, Simulink/SIMSPEAKER or equivalent
- Demonstrated ability to help translate ambiguous problems into actionable engineering tasks
- Ability to clearly communicate technical information to peers and non-technical stakeholders verbally and in written reports and documents
- Experience specifying acoustical system and component requirements such as micro-drivers, microphones, acoustic meshes
- Experience using acoustical test equipment from B&K, GRAS, Audio Precision, National Instruments, Listen Inc. or similar
- Critical listening skills for subjective evaluation of music/noise cancellation/voice is preferred
- Algorithm development and DSP deployment in Audio, Noise Cancellation, Voice or similar domain is a plus
- Experience with wearable acoustic structures and enclosure/port design for audio and noise reduction applications is a plus
