Have you got an inquisitive mind, enjoy solving puzzles, or love the idea of designing something and seeing it come to life?
If so, a career in Electrical Engineering could be for you.
As an Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) Degree Apprentice you will gain practical experience across a wide range of engineering activities, supporting the design and development of Electrical, Control and Instrumentation systems used within complex industrial environments.
You will get involved in producing electrical drawings and schematics, selecting equipment and instrumentation, developing PLC/DCS control systems, working with industrial networks, preparing technical specifications and calculations, and supporting system testing and commissioning.
Alongside experienced engineers, you’ll learn how engineering designs are developed safely and systematically, gaining exposure to areas such as control panels, motors and drives, sensors and instrumentation, functional safety, cybersecurity and engineering standards. No two projects are the same, giving you the opportunity to think creatively, solve complex challenges, and develop practical engineering solutions that make a real impact.
The role is primarily office-based design work, supported by practical engineering experience, providing a strong foundation for a career as a professional EC&I engineer.
What you’ll do at work
Work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team delivering projects of national importance across the nuclear energy, defence, and decommissioning sectors. You'll gain experience throughout the entire design lifecycle, from initial concept and feasibility studies through to detailed design and manufacture.
Support the planning and execution of engineering and design activities, producing engineering drawings, calculations, and technical documentation. You'll develop practical skills using industry-leading tools and technologies such as AutoCAD, Inventor, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and 3D printing.
Your training plan
As a Degree Apprentice, you'll combine academic study with hands-on workplace experience, allowing you to apply the knowledge gained through your university studies directly to real engineering projects. This blend of learning and practical application will help you develop the technical skills, professional behaviours, and industry understanding needed to build a successful career in the nuclear sector.
Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll progressively take on greater responsibility while being supported by experienced engineers and mentors. In your final year, you'll complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), which will demonstrate your competence and readiness for professional practice.
By the end of the programme, you'll graduate with a Level 6 degree qualification in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (BEng), alongside valuable experience delivering engineering projects within the nuclear industry, providing a strong foundation for a rewarding and long-term engineering career
You will have or be working towards the minimum entry requirements of 96 UCAS points from L3 qualifications such as A-Levels, BTech or T-Level in Engineering or related topic.
Essential qualifications
A-Level Mathematics (Grade C) or
T-Level Engineering or Technical (Grade Merit or Distinction) or
BTEC (Level 3) Engineering or Technical (Grade Merit or Distinction)
Desirable Qualifications
One or more of Electronics, Physics, Chemistry, Business, Computer Science, Design & Technology, Engineering, Further Mathematics or other STEM related subjects.
