Summary of Position
We are seeking an Additive Manufacturing Senior Engineer to join the highly collaborative ASTM UK team. Additive manufacturing is the primary technical focus of the role, with particular emphasis on process maturity, industrial qualification and the integration of manufacturing data, modelling and digital workflows. The role is delivery-focused, with responsibility and visibility across projects spanning UK and international programmes. Current major UK programmes include the UK ATI-funded Digitally Enabled Competitive & Sustainable Additive Manufacturing (DECSAM) project (PBF technology) and the UKRI-funded Future Leaders Fellowship (FLF) project (DED technology).
The Senior Engineer will work closely with UK and global colleagues, industry partners, and consortia to deliver technically rigorous, standards-aligned outcomes. They will own work packages end to end, from defining scope and planning through to managing milestones and reporting to programme partners and funders. Alongside project delivery, the role will support technically led business development, including contributing to proposals, engaging with industry partners and helping identify and develop new opportunities. The role suits an engineer who takes the initiative, works with minimal supervision, and is comfortable representing ASTM with senior industry and government stakeholders.
ASTM International’s UK Advanced Manufacturing team, now six years into its UK presence, is growing rapidly on the back of an expanding portfolio of industrial and publicly funded programmes across additive manufacturing and wider advanced manufacturing. The team is scaling its delivery capability while building its reputation as a trusted technical authority within ASTM’s global organisation.
Experience, Background, and Attributes
We recognise that strong candidates may not meet every criterion listed below. We are interested in engineers with complementary or adjacent experience who demonstrate sound technical judgement, curiosity, and the confidence to contribute ideas and challenge established approaches.
Core Experience & Attributes
- An engineering background with applied experience in metal additive manufacturing and appreciation of closely related fields in advanced manufacturing technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to apply engineering judgement in practical project environments, balancing evidence, constraints, and real-world outcomes.
- Comfortable working in a small, collaborative team where individuals contribute across multiple technical and programme activities.
- Willingness to question assumptions and contribute views on how work should be done, not simply follow predefined instructions.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage credibly with engineers, partners, and stakeholders.
- An interest in how technical work translates into industrial adoption, qualification pathways, or standards-aligned outcomes.
Technical Experience
Candidates are not expected to cover all areas below. Depth in one or two areas, with awareness of others, is welcomed.
- Practical experience of metal additive manufacturing processes, particularly PBF or DED, including process development, optimisation, characterisation or industrial implementation.
- AM data, data pedigree, evidence capture, traceability, or digital workflows supporting repeatability and reporting.
- Inspection, testing, monitoring, or qualification activities in regulated or industrial environments.
- Materials engineering within AM, including feedstock, post-processing, and downstream manufacturing considerations.
- Experience or understanding of materials modelling, simulation, or data-driven methods to support material property prediction, virtual testing and qualification would be advantageous.
- Experience supporting manufacturing process qualification, material qualification, quality assurance or certification activities, including the development of technical evidence and documentation.
- Industrial sector specialisms in Defence, Aerospace, or Energy, preferred.
Education & Experience
- Degree in Engineering or a closely related technical discipline. A Master’s degree or PhD would be advantageous.
- Typically, five or more years of relevant engineering experience in industry or applied R&D, with evidence of independent technical delivery, problem-solving and practical engineering judgement.
- A proven track record of independently delivering technical projects or work packages, from initial scoping and planning through to completion and reporting, with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with partners and stakeholders across industry, academia and government.
- Postgraduate qualifications or equivalent industrial research and development experience would be advantageous.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to join a small, highly capable UK team embedded within ASTM International’s global advanced manufacturing organisation, where individual contribution is visible and valued.
- A role at the intersection of additive manufacturing, broader advanced manufacturing, and standards, working on programmes that directly influence global industrial adoption and best practice.
- Meaningful responsibility from day one, with the autonomy to shape how work is delivered and the expectation that you will contribute ideas, challenge approaches, and help set direction.
- Exposure to a diverse portfolio of UK and international activities, including publicly funded programmes, industrial collaborations, and standards-led initiatives across multiple sectors.
- A collaborative environment that values technical judgement, curiosity, and integrity over rigid role boundaries or hierarchy.
- Ongoing development and learning, supported by working alongside globally recognised experts within ASTM and Wohlers Associates, and through engagement with international partners, committees, and technical communities.
- Opportunities to represent ASTM through technical workshops, standards activities, industry conferences, and invited speaking engagements, contributing to thought leadership and the organisation’s growing international reputation.
Working Arrangements and Eligibility
This role is primarily remote, with the UK team operating as a trusted, distributed group. UK and international travel will be required to support programme delivery, partner engagement, and public technical engagements.
Applicants should be based in the UK to enable participation in UK-funded programmes and partnerships. You must have the right to work in the UK; unfortunately, visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
