About the Boston Climate Action Network The Boston Climate Action Network (BCAN) organizes residents to advocate for climate justice policy in local and state government. Established in 2000, we have achieved major legislative and electoral victories, including the passage of the Building Emissions Reduction and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO), Community Choice Electricity, and the Gas Leaks Ordinance. We currently seek to decarbonize homes while keeping them affordable, create green and healthy Boston Public Schools, and improve existing building decarbonization policy. We know climate change affects everyone, but not everyone is starting from the same place. Those with the least economic, social, and political power are hit first and worst. Our campaigns always seek to undo this harm through a just transition. Roles and Responsibilities Our Advocacy Director is responsible for day-to-day oversight of BCAN’s campaigns, building relationships in and outside the organization, and recruiting and supporting volunteers. The Advocacy Director will report to the Executive Director. Member Development: Serve as the primary point of contact for all BCAN members, including the recruitment, onboarding, and retention of members, as well as the facilitation of the Action Team meetings. Support opportunities to develop volunteer leadership. Community Organizing: Organize outreach across Boston neighborhoods and network with Boston neighborhood organizations, particularly in neighborhoods most vulnerable to climate change and socioeconomic injustice. Our Advocacy Director is responsible for day-to-day oversight of BCAN’s three campaigns: Decarbonizing homes Creating green, healthy Boston Public Schools Improving existing building decarbonization policy Event Planning: Lead the planning of social events for team building and coordinate logistics for BCAN’s participation in external events. Logistics : Manage the technical logistics of the organization, including meeting reminders, notes, and summaries; maintaining and improving organizational systems, and communicating effectively about such logistics. Supervision : Supervise 1-2 interns per college term (spring, summer, fall). Other Information This is a full-time, 40 hours/week role based in Boston. This position is hybrid with access to four coworking space locations in downtown Boston. Community organizing work may happen “in the field” at various locations around Boston in order to impactfully connect with community members. It will involve some work in the evenings and occasionally on weekends. The role will begin as soon as you can. Skills and Qualifications Required Minimum of 3 years of experience in community organizing and environmental justice advocacy Strong knowledge base with regard to climate change and climate justice-related issues and policies; unwavering commitment to centering justice and principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and intersectional advancement of racial, economic, environmental, and other social justice. Demonstrated experience organizing in multi-racial, multi-generational, and/or multi-class settings Strategic thinking , effective facilitation , excellent verbal/written communication , and public speaking skills Passion for volunteer development and movement building Ability both to take initiative and to be comfortable working as a team player and collaborator in a grassroots environment Comfort with organizational tools, like Action Network Preferred, But Not Required Experience with organizing tools, like Action Network Experience–paid or unpaid– advocating for climate policy on a municipal level, especially in Boston and/or Massachusetts Experience running issue campaigns and/or managing volunteers Boston residency and/or lived experience in/as a member of Environmental Justice communities Familiarity with or membership in organizations representing Bostonians most vulnerable to climate change Total Compensation: $70-$75K (salary) + $9K (benefits) We want to support you in meeting your financial goals through a competitive salary and benefits. 💰 Salary: $70K-75K 🏥 Health Insurance 🦷 Dental Insurance 💊 Health Spending Account (HSA) 🏖️ Paid Time Off (PTO): 15 days + All MA Holidays 🏢 Coworking Space Membership 🚆 MBTA Commuter Pass 📰 Subscription to The Boston Globe Our Hiring Process Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, with priority given to applications received before February 20, 2024.
