Wat ga je doen?

What will you do?

Tijdens deze stage zul je bezig zijn met het onderzoeken van een Mixed-Integer Programming (MIP) algoritme. Elke nacht draait er een algoritme om onze reclames zo efficiënt en goed mogelijk in de reclameblokken van NPO 1, 2 en 3 te plannen. Kijkcijferprognoses vormen een belangrijke input voor dit algoritme, maar de gerealiseerde kijkcijfers kunnen hiervan afwijken. Op dit moment is het MIP-algoritme deterministisch. Jouw taak is om te onderzoeken of en hoe de stochasticiteit in de kijkcijferprognoses en -realisaties kan worden meegenomen in het MIP-algoritme.

During this internship, you will investigate a Mixed-Integer Programming (MIP) algorithm. Every night, an algorithm is run to schedule our commercials across the commercial breaks on NPO 1, 2 and 3 as efficiently and effectively as possible. Audience forecasts are an important input for this algorithm, but the actual audience figures may differ from these forecasts. Currently, the MIP algorithm is deterministic. Your task is to investigate whether and how the stochasticity surrounding audience forecasts and actual audience figures can be incorporated into the MIP algorithm.

Je begeleidster vanuit Ster is dr. Nanne A. Dieleman. Zij heeft zelf ook de bachelor en master van Business Analytics aan de VU afgerond en heeft jarenlang studenten begeleid bij het schrijven van thesissen tijdens haar PhD. Ze weet dus precies hoe het is om stage te lopen bij een bedrijf en ondertussen een wetenschappelijke thesis te schrijven. Samen gaan jullie er een geslaagd project van maken!

Your supervisor from Ster is Nanne A. Dieleman, PhD. She also completed the bachelor’s and master’s in Business Analytics at VU and has supervised thesis students for years as part of her PhD. Therefore, she knows exactly what it’s like to do an internship at a company while writing a scientific thesis. Together, you will make this project a success.

Je team / your team

Je zult het Data & Insights team komen versterken. Dit diverse en dynamische team bestaat uit 10 personen die zich bezighouden met alle data en onderzoeken binnen Ster. Er zijn in totaal drie data scientists die elke dag machine learning, AI en operations research modellen ontwikkelen om zo belangrijke processen binnen Ster te verbeteren en te ondersteunen. De rest van het team bestaat uit een business intelligence specialist, accountanalist, project leider, research consultants en natuurlijk de teammanager. Er zijn volop mogelijkheden om van iedereen binnen het team te leren en jezelf te ontwikkelen tot een echte professional.

You’ll be joining the Data & Insights team. This diverse and dynamic team consists of 10 people who handle all data and research activities at Ster. The team includes three data scientists who develop machine learning, AI, and operations research models to improve and support key processes within Ster. Other team members include a business intelligence specialist, account analyst, project leader, research consultants, and of course the team manager. There are plenty of opportunities to learn from everyone in the team and to develop yourself into a true professional.

What do you bring?

• Je hebt veel ervaring met Python en packages zoals Pandas, Numpy en Matplotlib

• Je hebt ervaring met versiebeheer zoals Git

• Je hebt ervaring met LP-oplossingssoftware zoals Gurobi of open-source alternatieven

• Je hebt affiniteit met algoritmes, vooral MIPs

• Je vindt het leuk om diep in modellen te duiken en het onderste uit de kan te halen

• Je vindt het leuk om met stakeholders te sparren over hun wensen rondom de resultaten en doelen van een wiskundig model

• Je bent communicatief, proactief, nauwkeurig, creatief en leergierig

• Beheersing van Nederlands is een pre, aangezien de voertaal en (geschreven) communicatie in het Nederlands zijn

• Strong experience with Python and libraries such as Pandas, Numpy, and Matplotlib

• Familiarity with version control tools like Git

• Familiarity with LP-solving software such as Gurobi or open-source alternatives

• A passion for algorithms, especially MIPs

• You enjoy diving deep into models and getting the most out of them

• You like to brainstorm with stakeholders about their wishes regarding the results and goals of a mathematical model

• You are communicative, proactive, precise, creative, and eager to learn

• Proficiency in Dutch is a plus, as both written and spoken communication are in Dutch
