AI Engineer & Internal Applications Developer
Build Practical AI Solutions That Drive Business Innovation
Location: Remote | United States
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: $120,000–$140,000 annually, depending on experience
Position Summary
AXIA Environmental is seeking an experienced AI Engineer & Internal Applications Developer to build internal tools and AI systems that help our technical teams work more efficiently, improve operations, and win new business.
This is a hands-on development role focused on designing, deploying, and maintaining production AI services and transforming them into practical applications employees use every day. You'll own projects from initial requirements through deployment and ongoing support, working directly with project managers, engineers, and company leadership.
We're looking for someone who enjoys building real solutions, solving complex problems, and turning emerging AI technologies into reliable business tools.
Examples of Projects You'll Work On
Estimating & Budgeting Tools: Build internal applications that combine rate tables, expenses, and target margins to generate project budgets that managers can adjust, evaluate, and compare.
Staff-Matching Assistant: Develop retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems that analyze employee resumes and requests for proposals (RFPs), recommending qualified staff with citations to supporting source materials.
Proposal Drafting Support: Deploy privately hosted language models that generate initial proposal drafts using RFPs, previous company proposals, and employee qualifications.
Document & Field-Report Intelligence: Develop pipelines that ingest, classify, and index technical reports, field notes, and project records, making company information organized, searchable, and accessible.
Key Responsibilities
AI Development
Design, evaluate, deploy, and maintain self-hosted language and embedding models for internal business applications.
Build RAG pipelines incorporating document parsing, chunking, vector search, reranking, prompt design, and source citations.
Develop evaluation methods to measure model accuracy, reliability, and continuous improvement.
Monitor deployed AI systems for performance, quality, cost, and failures.
Data Management
Build and automate data pipelines that convert PDFs, scanned reports, spreadsheets, and forms into structured, searchable information.
Design data schemas, metadata standards, and access controls for company documents and project records.
Extract and organize structured information from complex, unstructured technical documents.
Backend Development & Infrastructure
Develop and maintain APIs and backend services supporting internal applications across cloud and on-premises environments.
Manage databases, job queues, authentication, logging, and application deployment.
Implement security controls appropriate for confidential company and client information.
Internal Applications Development
Work directly with employees and leadership to gather requirements and develop practical, user-friendly applications.
Design intuitive interfaces that integrate AI services into everyday business workflows.
Train employees on new applications and provide ongoing technical support.
Maintain clear technical documentation to support future enhancements and maintenance.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Demonstrated experience building and deploying production AI/ML systems, not just prototypes or proof-of-concept applications.
Strong Python programming skills and hands-on experience with LLM and RAG technologies, including embeddings, vector databases, and open-weight model serving.
Experience designing and automating data pipelines using AWS or another major cloud platform.
Backend development experience with REST APIs, relational databases, and containerized deployments.
Ability to explain technical concepts, solutions, and tradeoffs clearly to non-technical employees and leadership.
Strong problem-solving, organizational, and project ownership skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer-sponsored visa sponsorship. AXIA Environmental does not provide employment visa sponsorship for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience deploying local or on-premises AI models, including quantization, GPU serving, and fine-tuning.
Experience with document AI technologies, including OCR, PDF parsing, table extraction, and layout analysis.
Front-end application development experience using React or low-code platforms.
Experience translating business rules, pricing structures, and operational processes into software applications.
Background in engineering, environmental consulting, or other technical or professional services industries.
Why Join AXIA Environmental?
At AXIA Environmental, you'll have the opportunity to develop AI technologies that directly support business operations and improve how our teams work. You'll collaborate with technical professionals and leadership while taking ownership of meaningful projects from concept to deployment.
