At Instem, you’ll empower pharmaceutical companies, CROs, government agencies, academic institutions, by providing cutting-edge SaaS solutions and consultancy services designed to help researchers make discoveries, and to accelerate and advance their research programs.
You’ll work with technology that supports over 50% of global drug discovery and is trusted by leading pharmaceutical, biotech and CRO organisations worldwide.
We're looking for a hands-on engineer who can turn business problems into working, production-ready AI-enabled systems.
You'll be comfortable writing code, integrating APIs, building MCP servers, developing agentic workflows and connecting AI capabilities to existing enterprise systems. You'll know when a problem needs conventional software engineering, when it benefits from model inference, and when the best solution combines both.
This isn't a role focused on configuring low-code automations or experimenting with AI tools. We need someone who can engineer the underlying integrations and capabilities, take solutions beyond proof of concept, and keep them reliable as systems, processes and models evolve.
You'll work alongside a Business Analyst who helps define business requirements and an AI Platform Engineer who provides the platform foundations. Your responsibility is to turn those requirements into working solutions that people can depend on.
Our Culture & Work Environment
You’ll be part of a friendly, solutions-focused environment within a global business of over 400 people. Here, you’ll experience a high-performance culture balanced with genuine flexibility - we trust you to take ownership, deliver meaningful results, and work in a way that suits you.
You’ll be encouraged to grow, share your ideas, and make a real impact. We’re passionate about creating a place where you can develop your skills, contribute confidently, and succeed in your career.
Why join us as a AI Solutions Engineer?
The role is a brand new role, and one of a kind for Instem!
We're building an internal AI engineering capability to change how Instem's business functions operate. This isn't about experimenting with chatbots or adding AI to existing workflows for the sake of it. It's about engineering practical, integrated solutions that make a measurable difference to how the business works.
As an AI Solutions Engineer, you'll build and deliver AI-enabled systems, agentic workflows, custom MCP integrations, skills, plugins and automations that connect with our existing enterprise applications and business processes. You'll work with technologies including Claude, Claude Code, Cowork, MCP servers and enterprise APIs, using conventional software engineering alongside AI capabilities to create solutions that are robust, secure and maintainable.
You'll work alongside a dedicated Business Analyst who helps define business requirements, and collaborate closely with our Principal AI Platform Engineer, who provides the underlying platform capabilities and deployment patterns. You'll have access to architecture forums and teams of software engineers working with agentic development, to share ideas and develop Instem's standards while developing your ability to deliver complex solutions.
We want someone who enjoys getting into the technical detail: understanding how systems communicate, building the integrations that make things possible, and solving problems that can't be addressed simply by configuring an existing tool.
Just as importantly, you'll help maintain and evolve the solutions you build. AI models change, APIs evolve and business processes don't stand still. You'll be part of ensuring our solutions continue to work as expected long after their initial deployment.
What You’ll Be Doing
Solution Engineering & Delivery
•Build, test and maintain AI-enabled solutions that integrate with Instem's internal business systems and processes.
•Develop custom MCP servers, tools, API integrations, scripts and reusable components using Python, TypeScript or other appropriate technologies.
•Build agentic workflows, skills and plugins using Instem's supported AI ecosystem, including Claude, Claude Code, Cowork and MCP-based integrations.
•Combine conventional programming, deterministic automation and AI inference, choosing the most appropriate approach for each part of a solution.
•Use established platform components and engineering patterns wherever practical, while developing custom capabilities where existing tools do not meet the requirement.
•Rapidly prototype technical approaches, validate feasibility and turn successful prototypes into tested, maintainable solutions.
•Deliver smaller solutions end-to-end with guidance, from development and testing through deployment and handover.

Technical Design & Integration
•Work alongside the Business Analyst to translate business requirements into practical technical designs.
•Understand existing systems, data flows and integration constraints, identifying opportunities to embed programmatic and AI-enabled capabilities into business processes.
•Design and implement integrations with appropriate authentication, authorisation, validation, error handling and logging.
•Work with enterprise APIs, structured and unstructured data, and the tools needed to connect AI capabilities safely to business systems.
•Investigate technical challenges, propose approaches and raise architectural, security or platform considerations early.

Production Reliability & Lifecycle
•Maintain and support delivered solutions, investigating defects, integration failures and unexpected behaviour.
•Develop tests and evaluation scenarios to validate both conventional software components and AI-driven functionality.
•Monitor solution reliability, performance and output quality, identifying where changes are needed.
•Help identify and manage changes in model behaviour, business processes, APIs and external dependencies that may affect deployed solutions.
•Maintain version-controlled code, configuration, technical documentation and operational runbooks.
•Improve existing solutions as requirements evolve, ensuring they remain effective, secure and supportable.
Business Collaboration & Adoption
•Work with the Business Analyst and business stakeholders to understand how solutions will operate within real workflows.
•Demonstrate prototypes and working solutions, gather feedback and make technical improvements.
•Support departmental onboarding and enablement, helping users understand and adopt the solutions delivered.
•Contribute to adoption guides, technical documentation and handover materials.
•Help measure whether delivered solutions are producing the intended operational improvements.
Shared AI Ecosystem
•Develop and contribute reusable skills, prompts, plugins, MCP tools and integration components to Instem's shared agentic ecosystem.
•Follow established engineering, review and documentation standards to ensure components can be safely reused and maintained.
•Share technical knowledge, demonstrations and lessons learned with colleagues.
•Keep developing your knowledge of AI engineering, agent frameworks, integration patterns and emerging capabilities.
Documentation & Continuous Learning:
• Maintain accurate documentation, runbooks, and handover notes for each solution delivered.
• Build technical depth in Claude, agent tooling, and enterprise AI practice under structured mentorship from the technical lead.
• Adherence to the Company’s Quality Management System to ensure that all work is handled Securely, Professionally and Diligently.
What We’re Looking For
Experience in software, automation, solutions engineering, or internal tooling (or equivalent), typically 2–3 years, with evidence of delivering working solutions rather than only prototypes.
• Hands-on experience building with Claude (or comparable frontier models), including prompts, tools, and agent-style workflows.
• Proficient in at least one of Python or TypeScript; comfortable integrating with SaaS APIs, spreadsheets, and enterprise systems.
• Working knowledge of web fundamentals, authentication, scripting, and basic infrastructure.
• Familiarity with Instem's agentic surfaces — Cowork, Claude Code, MCP, skills, plugins.
• Awareness of security, data protection, and governance considerations in enterprise AI deployments.
• Experience with ticketing, documentation, and change processes.
• Ability to write clearly — runbooks, adoption guides, and handover notes.
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Knowledge of the company’s Quality Management System and its application to tasks associated with this role.
Desirable:
• Experience in regulated environments (life sciences, healthtech, GxP) or working with QMS-aligned processes.
• Experience authoring MCP servers, Claude skills, or Cowork plugins.
• Familiarity with Microsoft 365 Copilot, agents, Power Platform, or comparable enterprise AI tooling.
