Who we are
Isla Health is a venture-backed health-tech scale-up, supporting partners across the UK, EU and internationally. We’ve built a new category of healthcare technology which we refer to as the Digital Pathway Platform (DPP). Founded in 2019, we now support 25% of NHS Trusts and see 2 million submissions on the platform every year.
As a company, we’re laser focused on enabling a scalable model of care which empowers healthcare staff and improves patient outcomes. The DPP supports this by setting up digital pathways which are remote-first and asynchronous. As pathways harness sophisticated automation, clinical algorithms and intelligent cohorting, patients always take the optimised route through their pathway, thereby delivering a step change in clinical productivity.
The role
We're looking for an Analytics Engineer to take ownership of how we structure, manage and use data across Isla.
As our platform scales, we have a huge opportunity to use our data to demonstrate clinical impact, improve our product and help teams make faster decisions. You'll be responsible for building the foundations that make this possible.
You'll own our BigQuery warehouse end to end: how it's modelled, what it costs and how Delivery and Product teams use it. You'll work out how our data should be structured to measure Isla's company metrics, and you'll do analysis yourself when it's needed. You'll report to the Director of Product and work closely with Engineering on how data is captured at source and on infrastructure decisions. This is a role for someone who cares as much about what a metric means as how it's built.
What you’ll do
- Make impact measurable. Work with Product and Engineering teams to identify what data needs to be captured and how it should be structured to reliably measure Isla's impact, including waiting-list reductions, referral-to-treatment (RTT) performance, clinical efficiency and patient outcomes.
- Own our data model. Design and maintain how data is structured in BigQuery, from raw sources to clean, documented, trusted tables. Set consistent definitions so everyone gets the same answer to the same question.
- Own BigQuery costs. Monitor, forecast and reduce spend, and set the practices that keep it under control as we grow.
- Serve Delivery and Product. Build the datasets and dashboards teams use for BI, client reporting and product insight, and help them self-serve safely.
- Advise on new projects. Shape how data is designed into new features and pathways from the start, so we can measure them from day one.
- Support analysis. Answer product and client questions with data, from feature adoption to pathway outcomes.
- Keep data safe. Apply access controls, quality checks and documentation suited to sensitive healthcare data.
Tech stack
Isla's DPP is built using modern cloud technologies, including Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Firebase, Node.js and TypeScript. We currently use BigQuery for analytics and reporting.
We're open-minded about how our data stack should evolve and are looking for someone with the experience and technical judgement to help us make the right decisions.
We also lean heavily into AI, and you'll be encouraged to explore tools that improve your own productivity and help us build smarter, more efficient workflows.
We're looking for someone with 4+ years experience in analytics engineering, BI or data roles where you've owned how data is modelled, not just queried it. You can move between a product conversation about what to measure and the SQL that measures it.
- Strong SQL: complex queries, window functions, and investigating messy data to find out what's really going on.
- Data modelling: you've designed analytical layers (e.g. dimensional or layered staging-to-mart models) and can explain the trade-offs.
- Metric design: you can turn a business question into a precise definition, and spot where the data can't support it yet.
- Cloud warehouses: hands-on with BigQuery or a similar platform (Snowflake, Redshift), including managing cost and performance.
- Communication: you can explain data limits and trade-offs to product managers, delivery teams and clients without jargon.
- Ownership: you'll find what needs fixing and drive it without detailed direction.
Desirable experience
- Experience building or maintaining ELT pipelines; Python for data work
- Experience working in a startup or scale-up where you've built or significantly improved data infrastructure.
- Familiarity with version control, CI/CD, automated testing and infrastructure-as-code.
- Experience working with Firebase, Firestore or other NoSQL databases.
- Experience supporting customer-facing analytics products alongside internal reporting.
- Exposure to healthcare data, sensitive information or regulated environments.
- Experience with data governance, access controls and security practices.
