Data Engineering Manager 2 | Central Data Products | Hybrid Working | Hatfield

Introduction:

We are Ocado Group, and we're bringing world-class automation to online grocery. Our Ocado Smart Platform (OSP) combines cutting-edge robotics, AI, and IoT within our advanced CFCs (Customer Fulfilment Centres). We've mastered the single pick, transforming online delivery for our global partners. Join us and be part of a team pushing the boundaries of retail technology.

About the Role:

As the Data Engineering Manager for Central Data Products, you will set the strategic direction for business intelligence and agentic analytics across Ocado Group. You will lead a dedicated team to bridge commercial needs and technical execution, establishing unified platform standards and driving the evolution from traditional BI to AI-assisted data access.

In this role, you will hold end-to-end ownership of our internal reporting tools and partner-facing data products, including OSP Insights. By establishing robust evaluation frameworks and aligning semantic architecture with business outcomes, you will ensure our global partners and internal stakeholders derive maximum value from certified operational data.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and execute the group-wide BI strategy, managing platform consolidation, seat rationalisation, and total cost of ownership.
  • Lead the Looker and Celonis Centres of Excellence under a unified, high-standard operating model.
  • Direct the rollout of agentic analytics, using Claude and Model Context Protocol (MCP) to enable self-serve access to certified data.
  • Collaborate with Analytics Engineering to shape the unified semantic layer migration onto dbt MetricFlow.
  • Establish evaluation frameworks, telemetry, and logging to rigorously assess AI accuracy, system performance, and metric trust.
  • Own the product vision, roadmap, and delivery for the partner-facing OSP Insights platform.
  • Define and articulate the commercial and operational value story of our data products to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Maintain a controlled, outcome-driven roadmap with clear prioritization standards for request deferral.
  • Partner with Partner Success to streamline partner onboarding, training, and operational support workflows.
  • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing team, fostering strong AI literacy and capability delegation.

What We’re Looking For:

Essential

  • Proven track record setting organizational BI strategy, evaluating platforms, and managing consolidation.
  • Strong end-to-end product management experience, preferably with partner- or customer-facing data products.
  • Practical understanding of agentic data access concepts, including plugins, skills, and MCP architectures.
  • Solid technical foundation in SQL, modern data warehousing (BigQuery, dbt), and semantic layer BI tools such as Looker.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate analytics deliverables into commercial value stories for leadership.
  • An evaluation-first mindset focused on production telemetry, error monitoring, and data governance.
  • Experience directly managing team members, driving professional development, and delegating capability ownership.

Nice to Haves

  • Domain expertise within grocery, retail, or e-commerce environments.
  • Direct commercial management experience, including vendor negotiations and licence budget administration.
  • Experience scaling internal analytics platforms into external, customer-facing SaaS products.
  • Familiarity with process mining tools or knowledge architectures (e.g., knowledge graphs, vectorised datasets).

Benefits:

We believe in supporting our people with meaningful, flexible benefits that prioritise well-being and work-life balance. Here’s a snapshot of what you can expect:

Time to recharge:

  • 25 days annual leave (rising to 27 after 5 years), plus the option to buy more – and 30 days a year to work from anywhere in the world.

Health & wellbeing:
