Join a global development team where collaboration and innovation drive success. You'll benefit from coaching, agile practices, and SAP's inclusive growth culture.
About the team
In SAP Finance & Spend we build the cloud-native software that transforms how the world's companies buy and, together with the world's largest business network, we deliver one procurement experience across every spend category.
Buying is at its most exciting inflection point in a decade. The shift from screens-and-forms to intelligent agents that understand a buyer's intent, act on it, and get the job done is happening here, in our products and we are building a new engineering squad in Brazil to help lead it.
This team builds buying agents. These are software programs that create requisitions, search catalogs, and aggregate demand. They help a buyer with procurement, much like a helpful colleague. The guidance provided is in natural language and follows established policy. It is also reliable enough for the largest companies in the world.
But the agents are only as good as the Buying capabilities underneath them. We own the core of modern buying and the enabling foundation that lets agents act on it: shared services for policy, request routing, orchestration across procurement flows, and governed human handoff. Great agents and a strong buying platform are built as one system here, not two that is what turns a clever demo into procurement that works at enterprise scale.
What makes this team unique: we are a proving ground for SAP's agent architecture. The patterns we establish how an agent plans, calls tools, recovers from failure, and hands back to a human become the standard the broader Buying organization builds on. You won't be consuming a platform someone else designed; you'll be shaping it, from real customer problems upward.
You'll work in a modern, AI-first engineering culture where agentic and AI-assisted development is how we work every day, not a side experiment. Expect an international environment, a collaborative and dynamic mix of technology and business talent across Brazil, Germany, and India, leading cloud and AI technologies, and solutions used by companies all around the globe.
What you will do
You will design and build the next generation of intelligent, agent-driven procurement applications. As an Application Engineer on our Brazil buying squad, you will take features and components from design to production on the SAP Business Technology Platform. You will own your work from start to finish. Your goal is to solve real buyer problems. You will create smart technical solutions that give an impressive user experience.
In this role you will:
Design and implement production buying agents: build the reasoning-and-tool-use loops, make them recover from failure, and validate that their output meets the quality bar, working from architecture and specs defined with the team.
Build the Buying capabilities the agents act on: the core buying flows and services, owned end-to-end from design through delivery. Getting this domain right matters as much as the agents themselves.
Integrate large language models into production services: this includes prompt engineering and structured output. It also involves function calling, retrieval-augmented generation, and protocols for agent-to-agent and tool interactions. MCP) embedded in deployed cloud services, not standalone scripts.
Build on the shared foundation: use consistent methods for policy grounding, request routing, orchestration, and human-in-the-loop handoff patterns. This approach makes behavior predictable and ensures that policy is enforced from a single source.
Build quality in: write the evals, guardrails, and tests that keep agents trustworthy: output validation, prompt-injection defense, PII handling, audit trails, and secure-by-design practice.
Develop cloud-native microservices in Java and Spring Boot: well-tested, observable, secure, and continuously delivered.
Work agentically use spec-driven and AI-assisted development day to day to advance fast without dropping quality.
Collaborate and raise the team: review peers' code, unblock and support junior developers, and address task-level ambiguity autonomously.
You'll do this as part of a highly motivated, agile team, with the autonomy to own your outcomes end-to-end and the support of a global network of engineers and architects building the same future.
What you bring
You implement agentic features with confidence and apply patterns correctly in your areas of depth. Hands-on AI experience is strongly preferred candidates without it will be less competitive for this forward-facing role.
AI & agentic development: hands-on integration of LLM APIs into production services; prompt engineering (structured output, function calling); a working grasp of agent patterns (tool use, failure recovery, bounded domains). RAG and vector-store experience (pgvector, Pinecone, Weaviate, or equivalent) a strong plus.
Backend engineering: Java 1721 and Spring Boot 3.x; REST API design; Spring Security (OAuth2 / OIDC / JWT); microservices patterns (retry, circuit breaker, structured logging).
Cloud-native delivery: Docker and Kubernetes; CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or equivalent); hands-on experience with at least one major cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP) or a PaaS equivalent.
Data: SQL fluency and relational design (PostgreSQL or equivalent); comfort with event-driven patterns (idempotent processing, at-least-once delivery).
Frontend (full-stack profiles): TypeScript with React, Angular, or Vue, built within a design system to WCAG 2.1 AA.
Engineering craft: test-driven development; security by design (OWASP Top 10); clean Git/PR discipline; spec-driven and AI-assisted development as a way of working.
A strong plus SAP BTP, CAP, HANA Cloud, SAPUI5/Fiori; experience in procurement, ERP, or another enterprise domain. These are learnable on the job not a hiring gate.
