What You’ll Be Doing:

Job Summary

The ERP & People Systems Architect is the design authority for Evolent's finance and people systems and their move to a headless, AI-enabled application experience where employees ask agents for HR and finance outcomes instead of navigating screens. Behind it, Workday HCM and Financials, Adaptive Planning, VNDLY, Salesforce CRM, and their payroll, benefits, banking, tax, identity, and data integrations remain the trusted systems of record. This role is a hands-on individual contributor who defines target-state architecture, technical standards, reusable patterns, and architecture decisions, and validates them through proofs of concept before teams build.

The Architect partners with the Director across all aspects of delivery, including building, operating, and automating solutions. The Architect owns architectural integrity and design quality, while the Director and delivery leaders remain accountable for priorities, capacity, and execution. The Architect also works closely with Enterprise Architecture, Analytics, Security, Engineering, Finance, Talent, and business stakeholders.

Work Location: This is a remote position. Candidates should be able to work primarily during Eastern Time business hours.

Essential Functions

  • Define the target-state architecture for the ERP and people systems portfolio and its connected systems, and sequence it into technical roadmaps with transition states, dependencies, and retirement steps, setting the major platform roadmap jointly with the Director, ERP & People Systems Delivery.
  • Decide whether needs are met through configuration, integration, or extension—delivered capabilities first, then APIs and integration tools, then custom extensions—and record significant decisions with options, trade-offs, and rationale.
  • Publish standards, reference architectures, and reusable patterns, and scale review to risk: standard changes proceed on approved patterns; new integrations, security domains, Extend apps, and external data flows receive design review; and the Architect leads design of new modules, middleware, AI agents, and major Finance or HCM redesigns with delivery and business owners.
  • Own the integration architecture and inventory for Workday and connected systems, including each integration's purpose, data, owner, security, and pattern; choose API, event, or batch patterns; set boundaries among Workday Orchestrate, Studio, EIB, and middleware; standardize authentication and error handling; and rationalize redundant point-to-point integrations.
  • Define system-of-record boundaries and data ownership for worker, organization, and finance data, including how Workday, as the authoritative worker record, feeds identity and access processes; set standards for data movement, lineage, and reconciliation; and design reporting and analytics architecture across Workday reporting, Adaptive Planning, enterprise data platforms, and business intelligence tools with Data teams.
  • Design ERP security architecture—security-group and role design, domain and business-process security, segregation of duties, privileged access, and integration identities—with controls that produce SOX and audit evidence under policies set by Security.
  • Set cloud SaaS standards for tenant and environment strategy, protection of sensitive data in non-production tenants, and resilience to vendor release changes; assess Workday's semiannual releases, vendor roadmaps, new modules, and build-versus-buy options for fit, security, supportability, and total cost through Evolent's technology review process.
  • Design the AI-enabled headless ERP experience: expose capabilities as governed APIs, events, and agent tools; keep business rules in the system of record; and decide what runs natively, in Orchestrate, or in cross-system flows built by the workplace AI and automation team.
  • Define responsible-AI requirements for AI features and agents that act on financial and people data: grounding in authoritative data, least-privilege access, human approval for transactions, evaluation and prompt-injection testing before release, cost per outcome, and audit evidence for Evolent's AI governance and Security reviews.
  • Build proofs of concept and reference implementations—API and integration prototypes, SQL data-validation queries, and agent or workflow prototypes—to test technical hypotheses, measure results, and recommend whether to adopt, extend, or stop before delivery teams commit.
  • Specify nonfunctional requirements for performance, resilience, observability (logging, alerting, reconciliation checks), and testability, including which critical business processes and integrations need automated regression coverage; delivery teams choose test tooling and run pipelines and releases.
  • Identify, classify, and size technical debt across architecture, security, integrations, and data models, including obsolete Studio integrations, and recommend a remediation sequence; delivery leaders own remediation, and the Senior Director sets investment priority.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in enterprise applications, ERP, or solution architecture, including architecture responsibility for business-critical finance or people systems.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise in Workday —depth in Financials or HCM and working knowledge of the other—covering business-process and security configuration, reporting, integration frameworks, tenant strategy, and release cycles.
  • Hands-on integration design across REST and SOAP APIs, event-driven and batch patterns, and tools such as Workday EIB, Studio, and Orchestrate or their equivalents, including authentication, error handling, and monitoring.
  • Strong SQL and data-modeling skills, with experience designing data flows, lineage, and reconciliation between operational systems, data platforms, and reporting or business intelligence tools.
  • Working knowledge of internal controls and privacy for financial and people data, including role-based access, segregation of duties, and SOX or comparable audit requirements.
  • Experience designing automation or AI-enabled solutions for enterprise business processes, including human-approval points, data-access controls, and governance.
  • Ability to produce architecture artifacts: current- and target-state diagrams, integration and data-flow designs, security models, decision records, and nonfunctional requirements.
  • Ability to explain architecture trade-offs in cost, risk, control, and user impact to Finance and Talent leaders and technical teams, in writing and in design reviews.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Architecture experience across both Workday HCM and Financials, and with Adaptive Planning, VNDLY, or Salesforce CRM.
  • Experience with Workday's embedded AI and agent capabilities.
  • Python or similar scripting for prototypes, data validation, or automation, using source control and deployment pipelines.
  • Experience defining evaluation, prompt-injection testing, observability, and cost controls for production AI agents.
  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI, integration platforms, or identity integrations with Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory.
  • Experience as the architect on an ERP implementation, major module expansion, or integration modernization.
  • Experience in healthcare or another regulated industry, including HITRUST or comparable control frameworks.

Preferred Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or a related field.

Preferred Certifications

  • Workday Pro certifications
  • Enterprise, cloud, integration, data, security, or AI architecture certifications.

General Performance Criteria

As the ERP Architect, you will be required to fulfill your responsibilities while meeting the following general performance criteria for this position at this level:

Expertise: Maintain hands-on depth in Workday, integrations, data, security, and AI, and keep standards current with each vendor release. Ground recommendations in tested evidence rather than assumptions.

Communication: Write decisions and designs that delivery teams can build from without rework, and explain options to business leaders in terms they can act on.

Domain: Understand how Finance and Talent processes, data, and controls work at Evolent, including close and planning cycles, payroll, compensation, and procurement, and make cross-domain trade-offs visible instead of favoring one function.

System: Be accountable for the architectural integrity of ERP and people systems, demonstrated by fewer point-to-point integrations, wider reuse of approved patterns, security-design compliance, and retired technical debt; delivery leaders own service operations and release outcomes.

Process: Keep architecture from slowing delivery: make timely decisions, drop reviews that add no value, and turn production incidents and defect trends into better standards.

Influence: Earn adoption of standards and patterns from delivery teams, peer architects, and business owners through evidence and clear reasoning rather than authority over their work.

To ensure a secure hiring process we have implemented several identity verification steps, including submission of a government issued photo ID. We conduct identity verification during interviews, and final interviews may require onsite attendance. All candidates must complete a comprehensive background check, in-person I-9 verification, and may be subject to drug screening prior to employment. The use of artificial intelligence tools during interviews is prohibited and monitored. Misrepresentation will result in immediate disqualification from consideration.

Technical Requirements:

We require that all employees have the following technical capability at their home: High speed internet over 10 Mbps and, specifically for all call center employees, the ability to plug in directly to the home internet router.
